In the United States a used motor yacht can cost from about $45,000 for a small 1980s trawler to around $8 million for a large 2011 model, and charters listed in Florida and Virginia start near $290. Documentation and warranties

A yacht brokerage guide in the results sets out documentation rules, including a minimum measurement of 5 net tons. Warranties vary: a standard yacht warranty covers hulls and decks for 5–6 years and mechanical systems for 1–3 years. The federal Magnuson-Moss Act sets only minimal rules on boat warranty terms, so ask for the warranty in writing. Registration and licensing rules differ by state, so check them in the state where the boat will be kept.

Season and when to book

Plan any survey or viewing around the cold months from December to February, when the weather limits what can be inspected on the water.

Name the port where the boat is kept, since the Florida listings show Miami and Fort Lauderdale. Ask whether a skipper, fuel or a full-day cruise is included in a charter price.
