Motorcycle anti-theft protection: locks, alarms, GPS trackers
No single device protects against everything
A motorcycle anti-theft system works in layers: the more obstacles, the less chance that a thief manages it within a minute. Mechanical locks (disc lock, chain, wheel clamp) stop the bike from being rolled away. An alarm makes noise and usually reacts to movement. A GPS tracker does not prevent theft but helps you find the bike, so it is fitted as an extra.
People often take a combination: a chain or lock to a fixed object plus a disc lock with an alarm.
Types and what to look at
- Disc lock: compact and handy, but you can forget it and ride off (some models have a siren).
- Chain: the thickness of the link, for example 12 mm, and the quality of the hardening matter more than the length. A thin chain is cut with bolt cutters.
- Alarm: siren, remote, motion sensor, alerts to your phone over GSM.
- GPS tracker: it needs a SIM card and power, so check whether there is an app and what subscription it needs.
- Security level: some locks carry independent ratings (for example Sold Secure or ART), which is a handy guide.
What to put in your request
- Type of protection — disc lock, chain, alarm, GPS tracker, wheel clamp.
- Motorcycle model — for example Vespa GTS 300.
- Features — siren, remote, GSM alerts, motion sensor, remote start.
- Security level — chain diameter or rating.
- Fitting — whether you need an alarm or tracker installed.
- Brand — for example Abus.
- New or used.
- Delivery city and budget.
Example: “I need a disc lock with a siren for a Vespa GTS 300 and a 12 mm chain. Preferably Abus, new. Delivery to Johannesburg, budget up to R 1,200.”
How to compare offers
Check the pin or link diameter, the material and the certification, not just the brand. For alarms and trackers, ask about the monthly connection fee, whether a separate SIM is needed and who does the installation. A badly fitted alarm can drain the battery or set off false alarms. Also ask about the warranty.
Check your insurance requirement: some insurers expect a certain class of lock, so confirm this with your own insurer.
Hide a GPS tracker where it will not be noticed in a quick look, and choose a bright disc lock or one with a reminder: that way it is harder to ride off having forgotten to remove it and damage the disc.
