How to buy a car jump starter or battery charger at a good price

Jump starter, charger or both: what do you need

These three devices are similar only in name. A jump starter (a portable booster) gives a short, strong burst of current and starts the engine without another car. A charger slowly restores the battery from the 230 V mains. A starter-charger combines both modes, but is usually bigger and heavier.

If the car stands in a garage and you are not in a hurry, a charger is enough. If the battery drains on the road, or on a cold morning in a parking lot in the hills, you can’t do without a jump starter.

What the choice and price depend on

  • The starting current must suit the engine: a 1.6 L petrol engine needs noticeably less than a 2.5 L diesel, especially in the cold.
  • The capacity of the jump starter affects the number of start attempts and whether it also works as a power bank.
  • For a charger, the modes matter: automatic cycle, AGM and EFB support, desulphation, reverse-polarity protection.
  • Trucks and vans may need 24 V, while a car needs only 12 V.
  • Extra functions (torch, display, USB) raise the price a little.

What to put in your request

  • Device type — jump starter, charger or starter-charger;
  • Battery and engine — capacity in Ah, type (AGM, EFB, ordinary), engine size and fuel;
  • Current — starting current for a jump starter or charging current for a charger;
  • Voltage — 12 V, 24 V or both;
  • Functions — power bank, torch, automatic mode, display;
  • Model, if you have already chosen one;
  • Condition — new or used;
  • Delivery and budget.

Example: “I need a new jump starter for a 2.5 L diesel, 74 Ah battery, starting current from 1000 A, 12 V, with a torch and power bank. Courier delivery to Pretoria, budget up to R 1,200.”

How to compare offers

The numbers on the box from different makers can’t always be compared: one writes the peak current, another the real one. Ask the seller to say what current the device holds under load, and whether the cables come with strong clamps. Ask about the warranty and whether the device is protected against short circuit and reverse polarity.

For a used jump starter, find out how old it is: lithium cells lose capacity over time, and a cheap one may not start the car in the cold.

How it works on BlaBlaPrice

You describe the device in a request in your own words, and sellers reply in the chat with models, prices and delivery terms. They see where they stand among competitors, so they compete for your choice. Your phone is hidden: only the seller you choose gets your contact. More about the principle on “How it works”.

Questions and answers

How is a jump starter different from a charger?

A jump starter gives a short, strong burst to start the engine at once. A charger restores the battery slowly from a socket.

What starting current does a diesel need?

A diesel engine needs a much higher starting current than a petrol one. Write the engine size and battery capacity, and sellers will suggest a suitable model.

Can I buy a used jump starter?

You can, but ask for its age and the state of the battery inside, because capacity drops with time. A new one comes with a warranty; for a used one, agree on it separately.

Will all sellers see my phone?

No, contacts are hidden. You share them only with the seller you choose, and only through the channels you name.
