Tyre inflator, pump or pressure gauge: how to choose and buy well
Inflator, hand pump or pressure gauge
These are three different things, and often you need more than one. A car tyre inflator, powered from the car socket or the battery terminals, tops up a tyre in a few minutes. A hand or foot pump is insurance for when there is no power. A pressure gauge only measures pressure, but a precise digital one is more useful than the dial on a cheap inflator, because built-in scales often “lie”. Many people take an inflator and a separate gauge to check it.
What really affects the choice and price
The main figure is output in litres per minute. For car wheels of R14–R16 a modest one is enough, but for an SUV on R18 or a van it is better to take a stronger one, otherwise inflating drags on and the inflator overheats. Also look at the maximum pressure (for a car, 7–10 bar is usually enough) and at the duty cycle: some inflators must be switched off every 10–15 minutes so the motor doesn’t burn out.
The power source decides the convenience. From the car socket is the simplest, but the fuse limits the power. From the battery terminals is faster, but you have to open the bonnet. A built-in battery is handy, but may be flat before you use it. Check the length of the hose and the cable: will it reach the rear wheel?
What to put in your request
- What you need — car tyre inflator, hand pump or pressure gauge.
- For which vehicle — car, SUV, truck, bicycle; wheel size, for example R18.
- Output — for example, from 40 L/min.
- Power — car socket, battery terminals, built-in battery, 230 V.
- Functions — auto stop at a set pressure, digital gauge, torch.
- Model — if you have already chosen one.
- Delivery and budget.
Example: “I need a tyre inflator for an SUV with R18 wheels, from 40 L/min, powered from the battery terminals, with auto stop and a digital gauge. Courier delivery to Gqeberha, budget up to R 820.”
How to compare offers
Don’t rely only on the numbers on the box: some makers state output with no load. Ask how long the inflator takes to fill a tyre of your size from zero, what the warranty is, and whether adapters for balls and mattresses are in the set. For a gauge, the accuracy class matters, and whether it can be checked.
How BlaBlaPrice does it
Instead of going round shops, you write one request, and sellers reply in the chat: which model they offer, at what price, how they will send it. The site puts the offer with the best value first, reviews of the seller are shown next to it, and sellers compete for your choice. Your number is hidden. More on the “How it works” page.
For a trip it is useful to take a spanner set too.
