Motorcycle Filters: Oil, Air and Fuel

First work out which filter you need

On a motorcycle, scooter or quad bike you usually change three filters. The oil filter goes in at every oil change, the air filter by the service schedule, or sooner if you ride in dust, and the fuel filter is not fitted on every model. Oil filters are either screw-on with a metal body, or cartridge types that fit into a housing. You cannot mix them up.

There are also free-flow air filters: they let in more air, can be cleaned and oiled, but do not suit every bike and may need the carburettor or the ECU map to be retuned.

How to choose the right filter

The most reliable way is by number. Look at the marking on the old filter (for example, HF204) or find the part number in the manual. If it is not there, give the exact model, year or generation of the bike: filters can differ between years of production.

A make without a model is only half the information. “Yamaha” says nothing, while “Yamaha MT-09, 2017” already lets the seller pick an equivalent.

What to write in your request

  • Filter type — oil, air, fuel or sport.
  • Bike model — make, model, engine capacity.
  • Year of manufacture — or generation.
  • Filter number — OEM or catalogue, if you know it.
  • Brand — original or an aftermarket one such as Hiflofiltro, K&N.
  • Quantity — one filter or a set for several changes.
  • Delivery city — and whether you will collect it yourself.
  • Budget — per piece or for the whole set.

Example: “I need Hiflofiltro HF204 oil filters for a Yamaha MT-09, 2017, 3 pcs. Delivery to Durban. Budget up to R 180.”

How to compare offers

Check that every offer has the same number, brand and quantity. An original and an aftermarket filter differ in price, and that does not mean the aftermarket one is bad: for many models known makers produce good filters. But avoid no-name copies with no markings, because a weak filter can damage the engine.

Ask whether the set includes a sealing ring (it is often changed together with oil filters), whether compatibility is stated and how delivery is charged for a small part.

How it works on BlaBlaPrice

You do not search catalogues or write to every shop: you write one request, and motorcycle-parts sellers reply in the chat with price, availability and delivery time. Your request is checked first, and you are told which details are missing. Sellers compete for your choice, so the price is often better. BlaBlaPrice shows the best-value offer first, and contacts stay hidden. More in how it works.

Common mistakes

Ordering by looks. Taking a filter “from a similar scooter” or a neighbouring model: the body looks the same, but the oil passage or the size of the seal differs. Not checking the thread size and the height. Ignoring the oil: along with the filter you usually need fresh oil. For related jobs see engine parts, and for the general overview, the “Motorcycle parts” section.

Questions and answers

How do I find the filter number?

It is usually printed on the filter itself or given in the service book. If you cannot see it, write the exact model and year, and the seller will pick a compatible one.

Original or aftermarket?

An original gives you certainty of fit, and well-known aftermarket ones are often cheaper. The main thing is a brand with markings and stated compatibility with your model.

How often should I change filters?

Follow the maker’s schedule in the manual. The air filter is worth checking more often if you ride on unpaved roads or in dust.

Can I order several filters at once?

Yes, give the quantity in your request. Sellers may offer a better price for a set.
