Gas boiler and water heater repair: how to find a technician
Safety first
Gas equipment is not a place to experiment. If you smell gas, do not switch on lights or appliances, open the windows, shut off the gas and call your gas supplier’s emergency service. Repair and servicing of the gas section itself must be done by a qualified technician who works with gas equipment. Ask about this directly before the visit.
What to write in your request about the boiler
The technician needs to know what they will be working on before the visit, because that decides which spare parts to bring. The more specific your request, the more accurate the offer.
- what the equipment is — a gas boiler or a gas water heater;
- make and model — for example, Vaillant ecoTEC plus;
- the fault — error code on the display, will not ignite, goes out, noisy, leaking, no hot water;
- type of boiler — wall-mounted or floor-standing, single or dual circuit, condensing, fan-assisted or with a chimney;
- age of the equipment — how many years it has run and when it was last serviced;
- address — city and area;
- when — urgent, today, or on a convenient day;
- warranty on the repair and budget.
Example: “Dual-circuit fan-assisted wall-mounted boiler Vaillant ecoTEC plus, 8 years old. Error F28 on the display, and the burner does not ignite. Johannesburg. I need a technician today or tomorrow, 3-month warranty on the repair, budget up to R 580.”
Repair or maintenance
Many boiler problems come from a lack of regular servicing: a dirty heat exchanger, a clogged filter, wrong pressure in the system. Planned servicing before the cold season, in colder regions and the hills, is not a requirement but good practice, and it helps avoid breakdowns in winter. If you need servicing specifically, say so in your request.
For water heaters, the typical issues are scale in the heat exchanger, the water-section diaphragm, ignition and draught. For boilers they are sensors, the pump, the control board and circuit pressure.
How to compare offers
- Is the diagnosis free, or is it part of the visit charge?
- What is in the repair price: labour, parts, the call-out?
- Is the technician qualified to work with gas equipment, and experienced with your brand?
- What warranty is given on the work and on the replaced parts?
- How fast can they come, especially in cold weather?
A common mistake is to choose only on the lowest call-out charge. You can end up paying more if the technician does not have the right part and has to come a second time. Ask whether they bring the typical spares for your model.
How it works on BlaBlaPrice
You do not have to look for service numbers. Create a request, and technicians in your city reply in the chat with a price, or what it depends on, and an arrival time. The request is checked, and you are told what else to state. Technicians see where they stand among the others, so they often improve their terms, and reviews are shown beside the offers. Your phone number stays hidden, and only the technician you choose gets your contacts. More in how it works.
