Hand Tools and Sets: How to Choose Without Overpaying
A set or individual tools
A ready-made 94-piece set looks like good value, but half of the items may never be used. For a car, a socket set with a ratchet and spanners is better; for the home, a hammer, screwdrivers, a spirit level, a tape measure and pliers. It is often smarter to take a basic set and buy what is missing than to pay for a box of “everything”.
Look at what is in it: the range of socket sizes (for example 4–32 mm), the drives (1/4", 3/8", 1/2"), and whether there are extension bars and universal joints. For a car you need a set that covers the sizes actually used on it.
Material and quality
The quality of a hand tool is usually decided by the steel. Chrome vanadium (CrV) is stronger than ordinary carbon steel and bends less under load; S2 is used for bits and drivers. Look at the finish, the quality of the plating, the size markings and how comfortable the handles are: rubber inserts don't slip, but wear out faster.
For professional jobs, known makers with a warranty are more useful; for home use a mid-range brand is enough. A cheap no-name set risks breaking on the first tight bolt.
What to put in your request
- type of tool — tool set, spanners, screwdrivers, hammer, spirit level, saw, chisel, tape measure;
- contents of the set — number of pieces, range of sizes in mm;
- brand, if you have already chosen;
- material — CrV, S2, type of handle;
- for what work — home, car, professional;
- quantity — for example 5 sets for a workshop;
- new or second-hand, delivery and budget.
Example: “I need a new spanner and socket set for a garage: sockets 4–32 mm, a ratchet, 1/2" and 3/8" drives, in a case. CrV steel. Courier delivery, budget up to R 1,200.”
How to compare offers
Compare the contents, not the number of pieces: a 120-piece set with tiny bits may be weaker than a 70-piece set with good sockets. Ask about the steel, the maker, the warranty, and whether you can buy individual pieces later. For several sets (for example, for a team), just write the quantity: sellers may offer a bulk price.
How it works on BlaBlaPrice
You write your request once, and tool sellers reply in a chat with the price, the contents of the set and delivery. It is free for the buyer. Sellers see where they rank and compete for your request. BlaBlaPrice shows the best-value offer first, with reviews beside each seller. Contacts stay hidden until you choose a seller. Create a request or read how it works.
