Used parts for Mazda: how to buy an automatic gearbox and other units
A Mazda automatic gearbox: what to find out before paying
If the automatic gearbox in a Mazda 6 GH or another model has started to behave oddly, look for a replacement carefully. The gearbox depends on the engine and year, and a mistake in one letter of the number means extra costs. Write the model, generation, engine size and VIN in your request.
Ask the seller about the donor's mileage, whether the gearbox came off a car that was running, and whether there is a note on the state of the oil. Dark oil with a burnt smell is a bad sign. Check whether the torque converter, the pan and the control unit are included.
Remember the electronics too: the gearbox works as a pair with its control unit, so after replacement you may need adaptation or diagnostics at a workshop. Ask your technician in advance what is needed, and whether it is worth buying the gearbox together with the unit or the wiring. That lowers the chance of needing one more purchase.
What to put in your request
- Model and generation — for example, Mazda 6 GH;
- Part — automatic gearbox, engine, door, headlight and so on;
- Year;
- Engine — for example, 2.0 petrol;
- Side — for paired parts;
- Colour — when it is about the body;
- Condition — working, with a warranty for testing;
- VIN;
- Delivery city and budget.
Example: “Mazda 6 GH, 2010, 2.0 petrol. I need an automatic gearbox, working, with a warranty for testing, preferably with photos and data on the donor's mileage. I will give the VIN. Courier delivery to Cape Town. Budget up to R 7,100.”
Warranty on a unit: how to read it
On units, breakers often give a warranty “for installation”, meaning a few days of testing. That is not the same as a warranty of months. Ask what exactly the warranty covers, and who pays for removal and fitting if the gearbox turns out to be faulty. Keep the chat history: it is proof of what was agreed.
When comparing prices, compare like with like: a “bare” gearbox, a gearbox with electronics, or a gearbox complete with the torque converter. The total differs between sets, even though the headline looks similar.
How it works on BlaBlaPrice
Instead of calling breakers, you leave a request on BlaBlaPrice, and sellers answer in the chat with a price, photos and terms. The platform shows the best-value offer first, with reviews of the seller next to it. Each seller can see their position among the others and may improve their terms. Your contacts stay hidden until you choose. The details are on the How it works page.
Look at other makes in the section of car breakers, for example Ford, with which Mazda for some time shared developments.
