How to Buy a Server: Rack, Tower, NAS, New and Refurbished
The configuration depends on the job
First answer the question of what will run on the server: virtualisation, accounting software, file storage, CCTV or a web service. For accounting software with 30 users, a fast processor and SSD matter, while for a video archive you need high-capacity disks and reliable RAID. Don't just write “I need a server”: give the number of users and the amount of data, so sellers can suggest a suitable configuration without extras.
Form factor
Rack servers (1U, 2U) are mounted in a cabinet or rack, and are compact and powerful, but loud. Tower versions are installed like an ordinary PC and are quieter, so they suit a small office. A NAS is network storage for files, backups and media, usually quiet and low on power. Server racks and power supplies are bought separately. Check whether you have enough space and cooling in the room.
New, used or refurbished
Refurbished servers, like the Dell PowerEdge R730, are popular because they give a lot of resources for a moderate price. But they use more power and are an older generation. Ask about the processor version (for example 2× Xeon E5-2680 v4), memory type (ECC), the number and condition of the disks, the RAID controller and the power supplies. Ask whether the server was tested under load and whether the seller gives a warranty. Also count the cost of electricity: an old server can cost more to run.
What to put in your request
- server type: rack 1U or 2U, tower, NAS, cabinet, power supply;
- model: for example Dell PowerEdge R730;
- new or used: or refurbished;
- processor: model or generation;
- RAM: size and type, for example 128 GB ECC;
- disks: number of bays, type (SAS, SSD), capacity, RAID;
- job: virtualisation, accounting software, files, CCTV, number of users;
- warranty, delivery, budget.
Example: “I need a refurbished 2U rack server for accounting software with 30 users: 2× Xeon E5-2680 v4, 128 GB ECC, 8 × 2.5-inch disks in RAID 10, two power supplies. Warranty of 6 months or more, courier delivery to Cape Town, budget up to R 23,000.”
How to compare offers
Compare the configuration down to details: type and number of disks, whether there's a RAID controller, the set of rails, cables and power cords. Ask about remote management (iDRAC, iLO) and licences for it. Discuss the warranty and whether a faulty part can be replaced. For critical data, plan backups whatever server you buy.
How it works on BlaBlaPrice
You describe the job in a request on BlaBlaPrice, and sellers of server equipment reply in the chat with configuration, price, warranty and delivery. They see their place among the others and compete, so terms often improve. The best-value offer is shown first, with reviews next to each. Your phone number is hidden, and it is free for buyers.
