Car steering: rack, power steering pump, tie rods — how to buy well
What happens when the steering “sounds” wrong
A knock over bumps, play in the wheel, oil leaks, noise and heavy turning are typical signs of a worn steering system. The cause is not always the rack: knocking is often from tie rod ends and tie rods, and a whine from the power steering pump or the drive belt. The rack is the most expensive part, so first let a mechanic on a lift find out what exactly has failed.
The type of assist decides the choice
Hydraulic power steering has a pump, hoses and fluid. Electric power steering (EPS) is an electric motor on the rack or the column, and sometimes electronics that need calibration. Racks for hydraulic and electric systems are not compatible, even if they look alike. One model often comes in both versions, so be sure to write in your request which assist you have.
What to put in your request
- Which part — steering rack, power steering pump, tie rod, tie rod end, steering column.
- Model and year — Toyota Innova, 2012.
- Type of assist — hydraulic, electric or none.
- Side — left or right tie rod end or rod.
- Condition — new, used or reconditioned with a warranty.
- Original or aftermarket — or a brand you prefer.
- Fitting and wheel alignment — if you need them at a garage.
- City, delivery and budget.
Example: “I need a hydraulic steering rack for a Toyota Innova, 2012. Reconditioned with a warranty, or new. Fitting with wheel alignment needed. Courier delivery to Gqeberha. Budget up to R 3,000.”
Compare racks with reconditioning in mind
A reconditioned rack is a common option. But “reconditioned” varies: some have the seals and bushes replaced, and some are only “washed”. Ask what exactly was done, whether it was tested on a bench and what the warranty is. Also important is whether you must hand in the old rack (a so-called “exchange”): the price can change because of it. For tie rod ends and rods, compare quality: a cheap unknown maker may start knocking within a few months.

Common mistakes
Buying a hydraulic rack for a car with electric assist. Changing just one tie rod end and not doing wheel alignment: the steering is tied to the wheel angles, so after replacement it is almost a must. Not checking the suspension, because the knock can come from there. Look at suspension and running gear and the brake system so as not to miss other worn parts.
