High-voltage units: no place for experiments
A Tesla differs from an ordinary car in having a high-voltage battery, an inverter and chargers. Buy parts of this system, such as the battery control unit, only from trusted sellers, and have them fitted by a workshop that works with electric cars. Do not try to replace such a unit yourself: it is dangerous.
Ask which car the part was taken from, whether that car had battery damage or a serious crash, and whether there is a diagnostic history. A good breaker will explain what was checked.
Pairing with the car and software
Many Tesla electronic units work only in a pair with others and may need software setup. Find out in advance from a workshop whether the unit needs programming and whether that is possible for the chosen part. In the request give the car’s version (Standard or Long Range, AWD, Performance), the year and the VIN. This lets the seller check that the part comes from a compatible variant.
What to put in your request
- Model — for example, Tesla Model 3;
- Part — the exact name: control unit, door, bumper, charging port;
- Year and whether it is pre-facelift;
- Version — for example, Long Range AWD;
- Side — for parts that come in pairs;
- Colour — pearl white and similar;
- Condition — working, with a warranty on testing;
- VIN;
- Delivery city and budget.
Example: “Tesla Model 3 2019, pre-facelift, Long Range AWD. I need a front right door without dents, pearl white, with trim and window regulator. Photos from both sides. I will give the VIN. Courier delivery to Gqeberha. Budget up to R 24,000.”
Body parts: colour and package
Tesla body panels are often aluminium or mixed, and repair takes experience. Check the photos for dents and signs of bodywork, and ask about the state of the edges and mounts. The colour is tricky, especially pearl: it is best to compare with photos of your own car in daylight. Doors can carry different modules: handles, locks, sensors, wiring. Ask what is in the package.
