DJ equipment: how to buy a controller, players or mixer at a good price
Controller, players or mixer: where to start
DJ gear comes in three different set-ups. A controller is a compact panel with decks and a mixer that works with a computer and software (rekordbox, Serato, Traktor, Virtual DJ). It is the cheapest way in and suits home use and first gigs. Standalone systems and a pair of players with a mixer are the club standard: the sound and workflow are the same as in venues.
For a beginner a two-channel controller is usually enough; for club gigs, players with a mixer are the better choice. Most clubs run this set-up, so any technician knows it.
What to look at
- Software compatibility: some controllers are built around one program, for example the Pioneer DDJ-FLX4 works with rekordbox and Serato.
- Number of decks and channels: two decks is the basics, four are needed for more complex sets.
- Jog wheels: touch-sensitive or mechanical, with a screen or without.
- Outputs and connections: balanced XLR or TRS outputs for a sound system, a headphone output, a microphone input.
What to put in your request
- what exactly — controller, players, mixer, headphones;
- brand and model, for example Pioneer DDJ-FLX4;
- number of decks or channels;
- software you will use;
- level — beginner or for gigs;
- condition — new, or used and in working order;
- quantity — for example, a pair of players;
- budget and delivery city.
Example: “Looking for a two-channel DJ controller for rekordbox, for a beginner. Pioneer DDJ-FLX4, new or used and in working order with cables. Ajman, courier delivery, budget up to AED 1,300.”
What else goes into a DJ set-up
Besides the controller you will need closed-back headphones with swivelling cups (to monitor one channel), active monitors or speakers for practice, a laptop stand and cables. Some controllers run on USB power, others need a separate power adapter. Keep this in mind when comparing offers, because a price without headphones and cables can be misleading.
How to buy used
Used DJ gear from clubs is often badly worn. Ask for a video showing that all the pots, faders, buttons and jog wheels work. Faders and crossfaders wear out first, so check for crackling and signal drop-outs. Ask whether the original power adapter, the USB cable and the software licence are included.
