Iron or Steam Generator: How to Choose and Buy at a Good Price
Iron, station or travel iron
An ordinary steam iron is fine for every day: it both presses and steams. A steam generator (steam station) has a separate boiler tank, gives stronger steam and copes faster with big loads, such as bed linen or curtains. A compact travel iron is smaller and lighter, but weaker in power. Choose the type by how much you iron, not by the idea that “pricier is better”.
What to put in your request
- iron type: steam, steam generator, travel;
- model: for example Tefal Pro Express;
- new or used;
- power: in watts, for example 2400 W;
- features: soleplate type, steam burst in g/min, vertical steaming, anti-drip, auto shut-off;
- warranty, delivery with the city and budget.
Example: “I need a new Tefal Pro Express steam generator or similar, power from 2400 W, with a ceramic soleplate and vertical steaming. Official warranty, courier delivery to Dubai. Budget up to AED 350.”
What really matters
Soleplate. Ceramic and stainless steel glide well and don't scorch, non-stick coatings are convenient but sensitive to scratches from zips and buttons. Steam burst helps with creased fabrics: the bigger it is, the better it copes. Tank and scale. If your water is hard, look for a model with an anti-scale system or the option to flush it, otherwise the iron clogs quickly. Anti-drip stops water dripping on the fabric at low temperatures.
Also look at cord length, weight and how comfortable the handle is: an iron that is heavy or awkward in the hand tires you quickly.
How to compare offers
Compare power, tank volume, soleplate type and warranty. For stations, check whether a stand and extra attachments are included. If you buy used, ask about the condition of the soleplate, whether it leaks and whether there is scale in the boiler.
For steam generators, also ask whether you can fill it with tap water or need distilled water or a mix, and whether there is a removable anti-scale filter. This affects the life of the boiler more than the brand does. For frequent ironing of bed linen, look for a station with a large tank, so you don't have to refill in the middle of the job.
