Dog kennels and runs: how to order at a good price
Kennel size: no bigger and no smaller than needed
A kennel should let the dog stand, turn around and lie stretched out, but it should not be too big, because a large space is hard for the dog to warm with its own body in cold weather. As a guide, the length is a little more than the dog's body length without the tail, and the height a little more than the dog's height at the shoulder. A German Shepherd and a Dachshund need very different sizes, so give the breed and weight in your request.
It is better to put the entrance off to one side rather than in the middle, with a small porch in front to keep out draughts. A removable roof makes cleaning easier.
Run: what to look at
- Area: for a large dog people usually take a run of 2×3 m or more, so it has room to move.
- Mesh: welded mesh with thick wire is stronger than woven mesh; for strong breeds choose a bigger wire diameter.
- Floor: concrete or tiles are easy to wash, a wooden deck is warmer but needs upkeep.
- Roof and shade: part of the run should be covered, to protect from rain and the hot sun.
- Base: so the dog cannot dig out, the bottom edge is buried or fixed down.
What affects the price
Mostly the material and the size. A wooden kennel made of plywood or OSB costs differently from an insulated one with a porch and a metal-sheet roof. For a run, the price depends on the area, the section of the frame pipe, a built-in kennel, doors and a lock. Delivery and installation are often charged separately, especially outside the city.
What to put in your request
- what exactly — kennel, run, travel crate or play pen;
- the dog's size — breed and weight;
- dimensions of the item, for example 2×3 m;
- material — wood, OSB, metal frame, welded mesh, polycarbonate;
- insulation and fittings — porch, removable roof, floor, built-in kennel;
- delivery and installation, condition (new or used);
- city or village and budget.

How to compare offers
Compare the material and the thickness of the wire or boards, not just the size. Ask whether the wood is treated with a protective coat, whether installation is included in the price, and how many days it takes to make. A good maker will show photos of work already done.
