A costume for one event: do not buy it
A bunny for the annual day, Santa for an office party, a superhero for a birthday or a costume for Halloween is worn once or twice. Hiring is cheaper than buying and does not fill your cupboard. It is especially good when you need several identical costumes for a group or a play.
The busiest dates are late October and December. Good costumes are booked in advance for them, so post your request as soon as you know the date.
What to put in your request
- look or character — bunny, Santa, superhero, historical costume;
- who it is for — child or adult, gender and age, for example a boy of 5;
- size or height — for children, height is easier to go by, for example 110 cm;
- occasion — school function, Christmas, Halloween, office party, play;
- hire dates — for example, 24–25 December; allow a day for a trial;
- accessories — mask, wig, props, make-up;
- quantity — when you need several costumes;
- deposit, area and budget.
Example: “I need a bunny costume for a boy of 5, height 110 cm, for the school function on 24 December, Central. With a mask and ears, hire for 2 days, no deposit. Budget up to HK$78.”
How to compare offers
Ask for a photo of the actual costume, not a catalogue picture. Check what exactly is included: trousers, headwear, shoes, accessories. For children's costumes, look at the fabric: it must not itch, and a mask must not block vision or breathing.
Find out how returns work: can you swap the size if the costume does not fit, and is cleaning charged. If you need several costumes, ask for a set discount.
Common mistakes
- Going by age instead of height: children of the same age differ in size.
- Not ironing and trying the costume on in advance, and putting it on only on the day.
- Not agreeing on timings: a one-day hire means returning the next morning, not a week later.
- Forgetting small items — belt, gloves, tail — that are easy to lose.
