How to find a financial analyst or economist for your company
Define the role first
A planning economist, a financial analyst, a financial controller and a finance director carry different levels of responsibility. An economist works out costs and budgets. An analyst builds reports and models and looks for reasons for deviations from plan. A controller watches cash flow and spending discipline. If you run a factory, you need someone who can cost products, while for a retail chain analysis by category and product group matters more.
What to put in the request
- Position — planning economist, analyst, finance manager or controller.
- Duties — budgeting, costing, management reporting, financial planning, cash flow.
- Company's industry — manufacturing, trade, construction, agri, IT. Candidates from the same field get up to speed faster.
- Software — advanced Excel, QuickBooks, Power BI, SAP.
- Education and certificates — a degree in economics or commerce, and if needed CA, CFA or ACCA.
- Experience — in years and in similar positions.
- Salary — an amount or a range.
- Format and city — office, remote or hybrid, city and area.
Example request
“A manufacturing company in Central needs a planning economist. Budgeting, cost calculation, monthly management reporting. Software: Excel, QuickBooks, Power BI preferred. At least 3 years of experience, a degree in commerce or economics. Hybrid format, salary from HK$4,700 a month.”
How searching works on BlaBlaPrice
You describe the job in your own words, without choosing a category. The request is checked: no ads or contact details in the text, and hints on what details candidates are missing. Then candidates in your region and profile see it and reply in the chat: briefly about their experience, expected pay and when they can join.
BlaBlaPrice shows the strongest replies by content first, and the reviews of each candidate are visible next to it. Your phone is hidden, and only the chosen candidate gets your contacts. It is free for the employer, and you can see how it all works on the “How it works” page.
How to judge replies
Do not believe the phrase “I know Excel”. Ask the candidate to describe which models or reports they built, from what data and for whom. For an analyst, a test task on a real but anonymised spreadsheet is useful. Ask whether the candidate can work with exports from QuickBooks and whether they prepare conclusions on their own, not just tables.
A common employer mistake is to look for an “economist for everything”: bookkeeping, analysis and fundraising. The result is disappointment on both sides. Contracts and court cases are a separate skill: for them look for a lawyer, not an economist.
