Home decor: how to choose accessories, textiles and lighting
An interior is made of small things that have to go together
The sofa and the wardrobe set the base, but the atmosphere of a room is created by lighting, textiles, rugs and decor. This is where a mismatch most often happens: the things are nice on their own, but together they don't match in colour or style. So begin with the palette and the mood, and only then choose the actual items.
Measure the room: the ceiling height, the width of the window, the free floor area. The size of the chandelier, the length of the curtains and the rug depend on this.
What to look for in each group
Light is the job of lighting: chandeliers, wall lights, floor lamps, spotlights. Bedroom textiles are bed linen and duvets, pillows and throws. For windows there is window decor: curtains, sheers, blinds.
For the floor and comfort look at rugs and runners and home textiles, and for mood home decor. For festivals there are festive lights and decorations, which are best not left to the last week.
What to put in your request
- What exactly — the item, its purpose, the room.
- Dimensions — length and drop of curtains, size of the rug, ceiling height for a chandelier, size of the bed for linen.
- Style and colour — modern, Scandinavian, classic; a sample photo.
- Material — cotton, satin, linen, wool, acrylic; for lighting: metal, glass, fabric.
- Technical requirements for lighting — the cap type, power, colour of light, whether you need a remote or dimming.
- Quantity — one item or a set.
- Delivery — the city, pick-up, timing.
- Budget — if you want to name one.
What to pay attention to
For bed linen and throws, the composition and the thread count matter: natural materials breathe, while synthetics are tougher and easier to wash. Ask about the size of the set (king, queen, single), because they differ. For duvets and pillows, look at the filling and whether they can be washed, especially if someone in the family has allergies.
With rugs, check the pile height, the backing and the composition. A long pile is cosy but harder to clean; for a hallway and kitchen a short one is better. Under a rug on a smooth floor, use a non-slip underlay.
For light fittings, consider the cap type (E27, E14, GU10), the power, the colour temperature (warm is usually for bedrooms and living rooms, neutral for kitchens and work areas) and whether bulbs are included. For curtains, check the drop, the width of the gathering and the way the rod is fixed. For south-facing windows, ask whether the fabric fades in the sun.
When comparing offers, check the size, the composition and what is supplied. A difference in price is often explained by the material or the number of items in the set. Ask about the warranty on light fittings and the option to return if the colour in the photo differs from the real one.
A typical mistake is to buy from a photo without measuring and to forget the lighting in the room: the colour of a fabric looks different by day and in the evening.
Don't buy everything in one day. First take the basics (lighting, curtains, rug), live with them for a few days and only then add the decor. That way you can see what the room really lacks.
How it works on BlaBlaPrice
You don't need to open dozens of tabs. Create one request, describe the item, the dimensions and the style, and you can add one photo. Sellers reply in the chat: what they offer, the price, the terms and the delivery. They see where their offer ranks and adjust their terms to win your request, so the price often comes out better.
The site shows the best-value offer first, with reviews of the seller alongside. Your number stays hidden until you choose an offer, and it is free for the buyer. More on the “How it works” page.
