Industrial rope access: how to order work at height without scaffolding
What rope access technicians are for
Industrial rope access technicians work at height without scaffolding or aerial platforms, descending on ropes. You call them when those structures are awkward or too expensive. The most common jobs are sealing joints and cracks in a facade, waterproofing and painting, washing windows and facades, repairing roofs and drainpipes, installing outdoor AC units and signboards, cleaning chimneys and dismantling at height.
For private owners, a typical request is sealing the exterior of a building where water seeps in during the rainy season. For businesses it is washing a facade or putting up advertising.
What to put in your request
- What to do — sealing, waterproofing, painting, washing, installation or dismantling.
- Scope — running metres of joints, square metres of facade, number of windows or points.
- Height — the floor or the height in metres.
- Property — apartment block, house, office, industrial building.
- Materials — yours or the contractor’s, the make of sealant or paint.
- Access — whether there is roof access, where the ropes will be anchored, and whether access is allowed.
- Address, timing, budget.
Example: “Central, a nine-storey apartment block. I need the exterior joints sealed for the flat on the 9th floor, about 30 running metres, because it leaks during the rainy season. Contractor’s materials, roof access available. Finish before the rains, budget up to HK$1,400.”
How to choose a contractor
Work at height is dangerous, so safety matters more than saving money. Ask:
- whether the technicians are trained for work at height and have sound equipment;
- whether they work in pairs and with two ropes, a working rope and a safety rope;
- whether they have insurance against damage to property;
- which materials they use, sealants in particular, and what warranty applies;
- whether the price includes cleaning up and getting approval from your building society or management.
How it works on BlaBlaPrice
You describe the job on the home page, and rope access technicians in your city reply in chat with prices and dates. They can see where their offer stands, so they can improve it. You see reviews next to the offers, and your number stays hidden until you choose a contractor. Read how it all works on the “How it works” page.
Common mistakes and the season
Sealing must be done in dry weather: sealant holds badly on a wet surface. So plan ahead and do not wait for the rainy season to start. Another mistake is saving on material: cheap sealant cracks quickly. The third is not agreeing how the work is counted, by the metre or by the whole job, so the final bill turns out higher.
For facade work, finishing work and construction services are also useful. If you need an air conditioner installed, see ventilation and air conditioning.
