How to find builders and finishing professionals quickly
First decide who exactly you need
In construction the word “worker” means nothing until the trade is named. A general labourer dismantles, carries and cleans. A mason lays walls, a plasterer levels them, a tiler works on an already prepared base. If the vacancy is vague, everyone will reply and the right specialist will pass by.
So break the site into stages: foundation and concrete, the structure, the roof, services, rough and final finishing. Each stage needs its own person or crew.
Which subcategory to choose
- The structure: mason, concrete and rebar worker, carpenter and formwork worker, roofer.
- Services: electrician, plumber, welder.
- Finishing: plasterer, painter, facade worker, drywall fitter, tiler.
- Machinery and management: excavator or crane operator, site foreman, quantity surveyor.
Most often people look for a general construction worker, a tiler, a plasterer and an electrician. If you are not sure who you need, choose a broad option or describe the task in words: the site will work out the category itself. For auxiliary work on site, a general labourer will do.
What to put in the vacancy
The more the candidate knows about the job, the better the reply:
- Trade and grade — what exactly to do, whether a certificate is needed (welder, crane operator, work at height).
- Site and place — city or village, whether travel is provided, whether accommodation is needed.
- Duration — a one-off volume, a season or permanent work.
- Pay — hourly, by volume (per sq ft) or monthly, and when it is paid.
- Tools and workwear — whose, whether you issue safety gear.
- Terms of hire — formal or by agreement.
- Start — when the person must come to the site.
Example: “Need a crew of two plasterers to level walls in a new flat in Auckland, about 3,000 sq ft, machine plastering. We supply the material, you bring the tools. Start on Monday, pay per sq ft, weekly advance.”
How searching on BlaBlaPrice works
You do not go through dozens of CVs: you write one request, and candidates in your region reply in the chat. In the reply they write about their experience, working conditions and when they can start. The request is checked before it is shown, and your phone stays hidden until you choose a person. More on this on the “How it works” page, and a request is created free of charge.
How to select a candidate
Ask them to tell you about similar sites and, if possible, to show photos of their work. Clarify whether the person works alone or with a partner, and whether they are ready for a trial day. For work at height and welding, ask about permits and safety practice. Compare answers on equal terms: pay per sq ft and pay per hour cannot be compared without the volume of work. An advance is better tied to a completed stage than to words.
Agree on safety separately. At height, near electrics or machinery the worker must know the rules, and you must provide helmets, safety harnesses and permits. If the site is large, split the work into stages and pay for each after acceptance: that way you see the quality and nobody has to wait for payment until the end. For seasonal work, such as facades or roofing, agree on spare days for weather in advance, so you do not argue about deadlines when the rain comes.
