How to hire a video editor or videographer for your project
Who do you need: an editor, a camera operator or both
A videographer shoots; a video editor assembles the footage and adds sound, colour and graphics. Some professionals do everything themselves, but this costs more and the quality is not always high in both areas. So first decide whether you already have the footage and need only editing, or whether you also need the shoot.
The type of content matters too: videos for YouTube, Reels and short-video apps, adverts, weddings and events, corporate video, music videos. Each genre has its own rhythm, style and software requirements.
How it works on BlaBlaPrice
You write one request on BlaBlaPrice in your own words instead of going through dozens of portfolios. It is checked for ads and contact details, and you are prompted on what details are missing. Then professionals in your area, or working remotely, reply.
In the chat they send examples of their work and tell you about deadlines, software and rates. BlaBlaPrice compares the replies by content, with reviews visible next to each. You pass on your contacts only to the person you choose. It is free for the client.
What to include in the vacancy
- Who you need — editor, videographer or both;
- Type of video — YouTube, Reels, advert, wedding, corporate;
- Volume — how many videos and of what length per week or month;
- Software — Premiere Pro, DaVinci Resolve, After Effects, CapCut;
- Pay — per video, per shooting day or per month;
- Own equipment — camera, lights, sound, drone;
- Format — office, remote, hybrid, one-off or permanent;
- Experience and portfolio, and the city.
Example: “A video editor is needed for a YouTube channel: 3 videos of 15 minutes a week, using Premiere Pro and After Effects. Remote, ongoing work, $63 per video. A portfolio of adverts or creator videos is required. We do the shoots in Auckland ourselves.”
What to agree before you start
Agree how many rounds of changes are included in the price, in what format and codec the work is delivered, and who supplies the audio tracks, fonts and logos. Without this it is easy to fall out by the third version of the edit. Also discuss deadlines: when the first version is due and how many days there are for corrections.
For shoots, it makes sense to agree in advance on rights to the footage, the use of music and the shooting locations. If you also need photos, look for a photographer, and for presenters or on-screen talent a model. All fields are collected in the section “Culture / arts / entertainment”.
