Car battery: how to choose and buy it well

A battery must suit your car exactly

“60 amp-hours” is not yet a choice. You need the case dimensions, the position of the terminals and the type of clamps, or the battery will not fit its place or the cables will not reach. So start with the make, model, year and engine: a diesel needs a higher cranking current than a petrol engine of the same size.

Technology: standard, EFB or AGM

If the car has start-stop or energy recovery, it carries an EFB or AGM battery. Putting an ordinary calcium battery there is a saving that ends in a replacement within a year or two. In a simple car without start-stop, AGM is usually not needed, although it will work. Gel batteries are rare, mostly in special equipment.

What to put in your request

  • Make and model of the car — for example, Skoda Octavia A7.
  • Engine — size and fuel, for example 2.0 TDI.
  • Capacity — in Ah, usually the same as the original battery or a little more.
  • Cold cranking current — to the EN standard, in amps; it matters most in cold weather.
  • Technology — standard, EFB, AGM; for start-stop, EFB at least.
  • Polarity — positive on the left or right, European or Asian terminals.
  • Brand — if you have a preference: Varta, Bosch, Exide.
  • Old battery exchange — whether you will bring your old battery, because the price may change.
  • City, delivery and budget.

Example: “I need a battery for a Skoda Octavia A7, 2.0 TDI, 2015. 74 Ah, cranking current from 680 A, positive on the right, European terminals. I will hand in my old one. Davao City, delivery or collection, up to ₱6,000.”

How to compare offers

Sellers reply in the chat, and BlaBlaPrice puts the best-value offer first. But a price alone with no details says nothing. Look at the date of manufacture: a battery that sat long in a warehouse may be discharged and have lost part of its life. Ask whether a warranty card is issued and for how long, and whether it can be exchanged if there is a defect. Check whether the price is quoted with the old battery handed in or without.

Sellers see the terms their rivals offer, so they often add free delivery or a charge. Your phone stays hidden until you choose a seller, and how it all works is on the “How it works” page.

Common mistakes

Buying the “most powerful” without checking the dimensions. Ignoring polarity. Taking a battery from a market stall with no manufacture date and no papers. If the trouble is not the battery but the charging, see the engine section (starter, alternator) or the general car parts section.

Questions and answers

Can I fit a battery of larger capacity?

Often yes, if it fits the original place and the polarity and terminals match. But the car maker usually states permitted limits, so it is best to check with the seller.

How is AGM different from a standard battery?

AGM handles deep discharges and frequent starts better, so it is fitted to cars with start-stop. It costs more, so for a simple car it is not always worth it.

What does handing in the old battery mean?

You give the old one to the seller, and the price of the new one may be lower. State this in the request so all offers are counted the same way.

Do all sellers see my phone number?

No, contacts are hidden. You give them only to the seller you choose.
