Car fridge: which type to choose and how to buy it for less

Three types of fridge

The difference between types matters most for price and result. A compressor fridge works like a home fridge: it cools regardless of the outside temperature, can freeze to sub-zero values and uses less current. It is the most expensive option. A thermoelectric one (with Peltier elements) is cheaper, but cools only a certain number of degrees below the surrounding temperature, so in the heat it will not give real cold. An absorption one runs quietly and can run on gas, and is taken for camping. A cooler bag with ice packs needs no power at all.

Capacity and temperature

For a weekend for two, 20–30 litres is enough, and for a family on a long trip, 40 litres or more. But a bigger fridge takes up the boot and uses more power. If you need freezing, for example to −18 °C, look for a compressor one. For drinks and food for a day, a thermoelectric one is enough.

Power supply and battery

A standard model runs from the 12 V cigarette lighter; for trucks there are 24 V ones; it is handy when there is also a 230 V mode for home. Protection against deep discharge matters: compressor models usually switch off at low voltage so as not to drain the car battery. Ask about this feature, and about the noise level.

What to put in the request

  • Type: compressor, thermoelectric, absorption or a bag.
  • Capacity: for example 30–40 l.
  • Power: 12 V, 24 V, 230 V or several at once.
  • Temperature: just cooling, or freezing, for example to −18 °C.
  • Model: if you have already looked at a particular one.
  • Condition: new or used.
  • Delivery and budget.

Example: “I need a new compressor car fridge of 30–40 l with 12/24 V and 230 V power, that freezes to −18 °C. Courier delivery to Davao City, budget up to ₱22,000.”

New or used model

Used compressor fridges are sometimes sold at a good price, but check the history: does the compressor hum, does it hold the temperature, are the lid seals intact. Ask for a video of it running or a photo with a thermometer. For a new one, ask about the warranty and service.

How BlaBlaPrice helps

You write a request with your requirements, and sellers send models, prices and delivery terms in the chat. The site puts the best offer first, with reviews of the seller next to each. Because sellers compete, prices often turn out better. Your contacts are not shown until you choose someone. How it all works is in the “How it works” section.

For a summer trip, look at car sunshades too, which keep the cabin cooler.

Questions and answers

Why is a compressor car fridge better than a thermoelectric one?

It cools regardless of the heat, can freeze and uses less power. But it is much more expensive.

Will a car fridge drain the battery?

It can, if it runs with the engine off. Many models have discharge protection, so ask the seller about it.

What capacity should I choose?

For two people for a weekend a small one is usually enough, and for a family on a trip a bigger one is better. Remember the space in the boot.

Do buyers pay for BlaBlaPrice?

No, it is free for buyers. A seller pays a small fee only when you choose his offer.
