Helicopter: how to buy or hire on a good offer
Decide the job first, then the model
A helicopter is bought for a specific job, and almost everything depends on it. For private flying and training people often take light piston machines such as the Robinson R44. Agricultural spraying needs a machine that can take the equipment. For carrying passengers, the turbine, the number of seats and the power reserve matter.
Before you search, decide whether you need to own one or whether hire or charter by the hour is enough. For a single film shoot or one trip, buying a machine usually makes no sense.
What to put in your request
An owner or broker will not reply in detail until they know the job and the budget:
- Model — a specific one, for example Robinson R44 Raven II, or several acceptable ones; the brand alone is not enough.
- Buy or hire — your own machine, leasing, or a flight or charter by the hour.
- Year — exact or a range.
- Hours and life — total airframe hours and the life left on the engine and main components.
- Purpose — private use, training, passengers, agricultural work.
- Papers — the airworthiness certificate, the register (local or foreign), import clearance.
- Technical condition — airworthy, after overhaul or for restoration.
- Base — the airfield or state where the machine stands or where you need it.
- Budget, if you want to state it.
Example: “I am looking for a Robinson R44 Raven II not older than 2010, up to 1,500 hours, with a valid airworthiness certificate. For private flying and training, based at an airfield near Quezon City. I am ready to inspect the machine together with an engineer.”
What really sets the value
The price depends less on the year and looks than on the remaining life. The engine and rotor hub have a service life in hours, and if it is close to the end, an expensive overhaul is ahead. Two similar machines can differ greatly because of this.
Next come the maintenance history, a complete logbook, any past accidents, the avionics kit and the cost of insurance. Count delivery or a ferry flight of the machine to its base separately.
How to compare offers
Bring offers to the same terms: the same type, a similar life, the same papers. Ask when the last periodic inspection was, whether the logbooks exist and whether you can have an independent inspection before paying. For hire, ask what an hour includes: fuel, crew, insurance, positioning from the base.
Be careful with machines that have no confirmed papers and vague answers about hours. It is worth checking the rules for registering and importing aircraft with an aviation specialist.
How it works through BlaBlaPrice
You write a request once on the home page, and owners and intermediaries reply with offers in the chat: what machine, the price or what it depends on, papers, photos. Before it is shown, the request is checked and you are told what details are missing. BlaBlaPrice shows the best-value offer first, with seller reviews beside it. Sellers see their place among the others and can improve their terms. Your phone number is hidden and opens only to the one you choose. Details are on the “How it works” page.
If a light aircraft suits you better, look at aircraft, and for leisure without an engine at hang gliders. All the directions are collected in the “Air and rail transport” section.
