Motorcycle speedometer and instrument cluster: how to find the right one
The instrument must match the motorcycle
Unlike accessories, a speedometer or an instrument cluster cannot be chosen “roughly”. Different models and years have different connectors, wiring and drive ratios. If you fit the wrong one, the speed and mileage readings will be wrong or will not work at all.
So the most important things in the request are the exact model, the year, and whether you need a single instrument (speedometer, tachometer) or a full cluster assembly.
Analogue or digital, cable or sensor
Analogue instruments have needles, digital ones show data on a screen, and on many modern bikes they are combined into one cluster with a backlight and gear and temperature indicators. Another important point is how the speed is read: a mechanical drive through a cable, or an electronic sensor on the wheel or gearbox. A cable-driven speedometer will not work with an electronic sensor, and the other way round.
Also ask whether the original instrument resets to zero or keeps the mileage. With a used one, the real mileage is not always known, and this should be reflected in the price.
What to put in your request
- Type of instrument — speedometer, tachometer, full cluster, odometer.
- Motorcycle model — for example Yamaha FZ-S.
- Year.
- Analogue or digital.
- Type of sensor — cable or electronic.
- Original or aftermarket.
- New or used — write that a used one must be in working order.
- Delivery city and budget.
Example: “I need an instrument cluster for a Yamaha FZ-S 2012, original, used in working order, with no cracks in the glass. Delivery to Cebu City, budget up to ₱3,200.”
How to compare offers
Ask for a photo of the front and of the connector at the back, and a video with the instrument switched on: that shows whether the backlight, all the screen segments and the indicators work. Find out the mileage and whether the instrument has been repaired. For new aftermarket ones, check whether the wheel diameter can be set. Ask about a warranty or a return if the connector does not match.
You can judge the real mileage of a cluster from a breaker by the wear on the buttons, scratches on the glass and the general state of the donor bike. Do not hesitate to ask for photos of the bike itself or its odometer.
How it works on BlaBlaPrice
Instead of scrolling through breakers and listings, you write one request, and sellers of motorcycle parts answer in chat with prices and terms. The offers are compared on substance, and reviews of the seller are visible next to them. Your phone number is hidden. Details on the “How it works” page.
