Legal help: how to find a lawyer or advocate for your case

Lawyers specialise too

Legal help covers very different areas, and a good divorce lawyer may not know much about company registration. So the most important step is to decide correctly whom you are approaching. It saves both money and nerves.

This page gives only general pointers. For a final legal assessment of your situation, go to a lawyer or advocate, who is responsible for their own advice.

Which area to choose

Family matters: divorce, maintenance and division of property. Inheritance after relatives: inheritance and probate. Buying, gifting and land: property and land. Employment and service matters are a separate area, so look for labour law.

For a dispute in court you need court representation, and for a criminal case defence. Business owners will want company registration and ongoing support, and for attesting agreements and documents you may need a notary. If you are not sure where to turn, look for general legal services.

What to put in your request

  • The core of the matter — briefly, 2–3 sentences, without needless detail.
  • What you want — advice, a document, ongoing support, representation.
  • Stage of the case — just starting, a decision already made, or proceedings open.
  • Timing — a hearing date, a deadline or a filing date.
  • City — where presence is needed, or whether online will do.
  • Documents you have — an agreement, a certificate, a court order.
  • Budget — and whether you can pay in stages.

Don't put ID numbers, card numbers or exact addresses in the request: tell the lawyer you choose in a private conversation.

How to compare offers

Find out how the fee is set: a fixed sum, an hourly rate or a percentage. Ask for a breakdown of what is included: advice, preparing documents, filing, appearing at hearings, travel. For court cases, check whether appeals to higher courts are included, because usually they are not.

Ask about experience in similar cases, not in general. A good lawyer is honest about risks and does not promise a particular result in court or before an authority. That is not a weakness: the court decides, and nobody can guarantee it.

Ask for a written engagement letter that fixes the amount, the deadlines and how payment is made. For an advocate, check that they are enrolled with the Bar Council. For a notary, fees for many services are fixed by rules, so compare mainly timing, the list of documents and convenience.

A common mistake is to go too late, when deadlines have already passed, or to hand over original documents without a receipt.

If the matter is urgent, say so at once: many issues have time limits, for example for filing documents or appealing. Ask which documents to prepare for the first meeting, so you don't spend paid time looking for them.

Business owners should check whether the price covers drafting the founding documents, opening a bank account and choosing a tax arrangement, and for inheritance and property, what happens with government and notary charges: these are usually paid separately.

How it works on BlaBlaPrice

You don't need to phone offices. Describe the matter in one request, and lawyers, advocates and notaries in your area send offers in the chat: the price or what it depends on, the timing, the list of services. They can see where their offer stands and may improve their terms. The site shows the most useful one first, with reviews beside each.

Your phone number stays hidden, and it is free for the buyer. More on the “How it works” page.

Questions and answers

How do I choose between a lawyer and an advocate?

A lawyer mostly advises and prepares documents, while an advocate can represent and defend you in court and holds the required status. If you need a court appearance or have a criminal case, look for an advocate.

What does the cost of legal help depend on?

On the complexity of the case, the amount of work, the city and the urgency. So ask for a breakdown of what the amount includes.

Is it safe to describe my case in a request?

Write briefly and without personal data, documents or exact addresses. You can share details with the lawyer you choose.

Can I get advice online?

Yes, many lawyers advise remotely. Say in the request that an online format suits you.
