Railway wagons: buying and hiring without searching databases
The wagon type decides everything
Wagons are bought and hired for a specific cargo, so start with that. For grain and fertiliser people look for hoppers, for coal and crushed stone open wagons, for oil products tank wagons, and for various goods covered wagons and flat wagons. Even within one type there are versions with different capacity and hatch design.
Also decide what suits you: buying, hire for a season or hire for a year. Hire is often needed by farmers who have a peak load only in the harvest season.
What to put in your request
Owners and intermediaries reply more precisely when they see the full picture:
- Type of wagon — grain hopper, open wagon, tank wagon, flat wagon, covered wagon.
- Number — single units or a batch, and whether they must be of one type.
- Buy or hire — the hire period and terms of extension.
- Load capacity and volume — for example 70 t and 120 m³.
- Year built — the earliest you accept.
- Remaining life — when the last major overhaul was and until which year the wagon can be used.
- Papers — the wagon's papers, proof of ownership or hire rights.
- Station — where the wagons stand and where they must be delivered.
- Budget per wagon, if you want to state it.
Example: “I need 10 grain hoppers for a one-year hire, load capacity 70 t, 120 m³, built after 2005, after a major overhaul, with proof of ownership. A station near Quezon City, needed from early summer.”
What the price depends on
The price is set mostly by the technical condition and the time before the next planned repair. A wagon with its life almost used up is cheaper but needs investment. On top come the type and volume of the body, whether the hatches and unloading devices are present and working, and the number of wagons in the batch.
Count separately the move to the station you need, the paperwork and the charges for placing the wagons. These items often differ between offers, so comparing on the bare price is misleading.
What to look at when comparing
- The year built and the date of the last major overhaul.
- Whether the papers are confirmed and who owns the wagon.
- Who pays for routine repairs during the hire.
- Whether moving the wagons to your station is in the price.
