Women's Blazers and Jackets: How to Buy at a Good Price
You buy a blazer by its shoulders
What matters most in a blazer is the fit at the shoulders. If the shoulder seam falls below the edge of your shoulder, it is oversized; if that is not the intended look, the blazer will seem to belong to someone else. Sleeve length and waist are easy to alter, but the shoulders are almost impossible to fix.
So compare measurements: shoulder width, chest, garment length and sleeve length. A double-breasted cut and a style that emphasises the waist sit differently on different figures.
What to put in your request
- Style — classic, oversized, cropped, double-breasted, longline jacket.
- Fabric — wool, linen, tweed, formal suiting, bouclé.
- Size — letter size or UK size, plus measurements.
- Occasion — office, evening, farewell party, wedding, everyday.
- Colour or pattern — plain, checked, herringbone.
- Brand — for example Mango.
- Condition — new or second-hand.
- Budget and city.
Example: “I am looking for a new blazer for the office, classic straight cut, checked wool, size M, Mango or a similar brand. Quezon City, courier delivery with a trial option. Budget up to ₱3,800.”
What the fabric changes
Wool and formal suiting hold their shape and suit cooler months. Linen is cool and good for summer, but it creases. Tweed and bouclé look rich but can fray along the seam, so check the edge. Choose a viscose lining rather than cheap polyester: it breathes.
A blazer for the office, a celebration or everyday
For the office, people go for a classic single-breasted blazer in a neutral colour: charcoal, navy or beige. A double-breasted or cropped jacket is more about style and looks good with high-waisted trousers. For an evening out, a jacket with a sheen or in velvet works, and for everyday wear, a knitted or linen blazer that does not restrict movement.
If you are buying a blazer as part of a suit, check that matching trousers or a skirt in the same shade are available: different batches of fabric can vary.
How to compare offers
Compare the composition and whether there is a lining, the quality of the buttons and the finish of the pockets. For second-hand, ask about shine on the elbows, the condition of the lining under the arms and whether it has been altered. Find out the return terms in case the blazer does not fit.
