Motorcycle Cables and Hoses: How to Choose and Buy at a Good Price
Cable or hose: be clear about what you are replacing
A motorcycle has many cables, and they are not interchangeable. The throttle cable controls the throttle valve or the carburettor slide, the clutch cable links the lever to the clutch arm, the speedometer cable passes rotation to the instrument, and the choke cable opens the extra fuel enrichment. On many models the throttle has two cables: one opens and the other closes. So write “throttle cable” and say how many your model has.
Hoses can be fuel, vacuum, coolant and brake. A brake hose works under high pressure, so the requirements are different from a fuel hose: it is reinforced, often with a steel braid.
Length, ends, outer sleeve
The most common reason for returns is the wrong length. Look separately at the length of the outer sleeve and the length of the inner wire, because they are different. The ends matter too: a cylindrical nipple, a barrel end, a threaded adjuster, the shape of the eyelet. If a cable from another model has the same length but a different end, it will not fit. So lay the old cable beside you, straighten it without tension, measure the sleeve and the wire in millimetres and photograph both ends.
For older bikes such as the Yamaha RD 250 or the Honda CB 125, new original cables are sometimes no longer made. Then it is worth asking for equivalents from other models, made-to-order cables or old stock. This is exactly the case where you should not wait for an answer from a single seller.
What to put in your request
- which part — throttle, clutch, brake, speedometer or choke cable; fuel or brake hose;
- bike model and year — for example, Yamaha RD 250, 1990;
- length in millimetres and the end type, if you measured it;
- original or aftermarket — or a specific brand;
- quantity — single, a pair or a set;
- condition — new, used or reconditioned;
- delivery city and budget, if you want to name one.
Example: “I am looking for a new throttle cable for a Yamaha RD 250, 1990, length 1100 mm, 2 pcs. Original or a good-quality aftermarket one preferred. Delivery to Woodlands, budget up to $6.07.”
How to compare offers
Check the length and the type of end, not just the model name. Ask whether the cable comes with the outer sleeve and adjuster, or whether they must be bought separately. For brake hoses, ask what material they are made of, and ask for the manufacture date: rubber ages even in a warehouse. Do not buy a brake hose “by eye”, because your safety depends on it.
If you change your mind while waiting and want to add another part, you can edit the request while you wait for replies.
How it works on BlaBlaPrice
Instead of calling motorcycle-parts shops, you write one request, and sellers reply in the chat with photos, prices and delivery terms. The platform shows the best-value offer first, and next to each you can see reviews of the seller. Sellers see their place among the others and often improve their terms. Your phone number stays hidden until you choose a seller. More on the “How it works” page.
