Custom cake and desserts: how to find a baker and compare prices
Start with the guests, not the design
The size of a cake is worked out from the number of guests. Count a portion of about 100–150 g per person: for 20 people that is 2–3 kg, depending on whether there will be other desserts. A single-tier 3 kg cake looks quite different from a two-tier one of the same weight. So in your request give both the weight and the number of people, and say whether there are other dishes.
Format is a separate matter: a classic cake, a bento cake for two or three people, cupcakes, macarons, decorated cookies, a candy bar for a party. Each has its own minimum quantity and lead time.
Filling, decoration, restrictions
Popular fillings are chocolate, berry, caramel, nut and cheesecake-style. Decoration makes the biggest difference to the price: fondant figures, photo printing, fresh flowers and hand painting cost more than a plain cream cake. If your guests have restrictions, write about them straight away: sugar-free, gluten-free, dairy-free, eggless, a vegan version or allergies. Not every baker works with such recipes, and you need to know before you order.
How to find a baker through BlaBlaPrice
On BlaBlaPrice you describe the cake once and can add a reference photo. Bakers in your city reply with the filling and decoration they offer, the price and when they are ready. You do not have to message a dozen accounts. Bakers can see where their offer ranks and compete on terms. Your phone number stays hidden until you choose a provider.
What to put in your request
- Type of dessert — cake, bento, cupcakes, candy bar, macarons, decorated cookies.
- Quantity — weight in kilograms, pieces or number of guests.
- Date by which you need it.
- Filling or flavour.
- Decoration — figures, photo printing, flowers, a message, colours.
- Occasion — birthday, wedding, naming ceremony, office party.
- City and delivery — pick-up or an address.
- Restrictions — dairy-free, gluten-free, eggless, allergies.
- Budget, if you want to name one.
Example: “I need a birthday cake for my daughter, 3 kg, chocolate-cherry filling, fondant figures and a message. Eggless. By 20 May, delivery to a restaurant in Ang Mo Kio. Budget up to $45.”
What to check before ordering
Agree on a sketch and on how much the final look may differ: handmade work never copies a photo 100 per cent. Ask about storage and transport, especially in summer: a cream cake does not like the heat. Find out whether delivery is in the price and who is responsible if the cake is damaged on the way.
Ask for photos of similar work and look at the reviews next to the offer. For big cakes and wedding orders, reserve the date one or two weeks ahead, and for complex decoration even earlier.
Cakes go well with balloon decoration and entertainers for a children's party, and for an adult event with catering. For more about the service, see the “How it works” page.
