Renting a garage or parking spot near your home: how to find one
Garage, basement parking or an open spot
A garage unit suits you if you want a closed space, or a pit, storeroom or workshop. A spot in basement parking is handy near a new apartment complex: it is protected from weather and usually guarded. An open or covered spot is cheapest but protects the vehicle least.
Start simply: does the vehicle need a daily spot or temporary storage? For daily use, the distance from home and easy access matter. For seasonal storage, for example in the rainy season, dryness and protection matter. If you need a garage for storage or a workshop, also think about ventilation, light and room for a shelf.
What to put in your request
- area — street, apartment complex or metro station nearby;
- type of space — garage, basement spot, open or covered;
- monthly rent;
- vehicle — hatchback, SUV, van, motorbike, or storage only;
- rental period — a month, six months or longer;
- conditions — pit, storeroom, electricity, security, 24-hour access;
- start date.
Example: “I am looking for a garage or a basement parking spot near Singapore, for an SUV 1.8 m tall. Preferably with electricity and security, for six months from 1 December. Budget up to $64 a month.”
How to search with BlaBlaPrice
Instead of calling numbers from notices on poles and in group chats, you create a request. Owners of garages and parking spots in your area reply in the chat with offers: location, size, price, access terms, photos. They can see their position among others, so owners compete for the tenant. Your number stays hidden until you choose an owner.
What to ask in the offers
- Size: entry height and width of the lane, especially for SUVs and vans.
- For basement parking: ceiling height on the ramp and width of the bay so you can open the doors.
- For a garage: condition of the roof and door, damp, and whether there is light and a meter.
- Whether electricity, security and cleaning are included in the price.
- Access: key, remote or pass, and the hours you can drive in.
- Agreement: write the amount, period, exit terms and deposit down.
Common mistakes
Not measuring height and width and then not fitting. Not visiting the garage in the rain and missing a leak. Paying in advance without an agreement. Ignoring the low entry height of a parking basement: some SUVs cannot get in. Not asking about the housing complex: whether there is security, what the charges are and whether it allows renting out a garage.
