Hydraulic Oils for Excavators, Tractors and Power Steering

Viscosity grade and standard: two things that decide everything

You buy hydraulic oil not by “whichever is cheaper” but by what the machine's manufacturer specifies. On the label, look for the ISO VG viscosity grade (most often 32, 46 or 68) and the type: HLP, HVLP or HM under DIN 51524. Older or local grade names may also appear; match them to the ISO VG grade. In cold conditions, such as the mountains or a cold workshop in winter, oil with a higher viscosity index (HVLP) is better, because it thickens less.

What system the oil is for

  • Excavators, loaders, skid-steer loaders — usually HLP or HVLP 46.
  • Tractors and harvesters — sometimes one oil serves both the hydraulics and the transmission, so check the manual.
  • Presses, machine tools, lifts — depends on the equipment's data plate.
  • Power steering in a passenger car — not always hydraulic oil: it often needs ATF or a special fluid.

What to put in your request

  • Machine — which system and machine, for example the hydraulic system of a JCB excavator;
  • Viscosity grade — ISO VG 32, 46, 68;
  • Standard — HLP, HVLP, HM, or a local grade name;
  • Brand, if you have requirements or a habit, for example Mobil DTE 25;
  • Quantity — litres, 20 L cans or a 208 L drum;
  • Delivery city and budget.

Example: “I need HLP ISO VG 46 hydraulic oil for a JCB excavator, one 208 L drum, preferably Mobil DTE 25 or an equivalent. Delivery to Ang Mo Kio, budget up to $460.”

How to compare offers

Count the price per litre with delivery, because a 208 L drum usually works out cheaper than cans. Check that the offer has the same grade and standard, otherwise the comparison is not fair. Look at the machine maker's approvals: some hydraulic systems (especially imported ones) have their own requirements. Do not mix different types of oil without a specialist's advice, and before changing, find out whether the system needs flushing.

Ask about the packaging: an intact drum with no signs of being opened, or does the seller pour from a big container? Ask for a certificate and the manufacturing date, especially for large batches. If the machine works outdoors in the cold, ask about the pour point and the working temperature range of the oil. Biodegradable hydraulic oils also exist for environmentally sensitive sites: they cost more and need a compatibility check with older seals.

How it works on BlaBlaPrice

One request is enough: oil sellers send offers in the chat with quantity, price and delivery. They can see where their offer stands, so they compete for your choice. Your phone number stays hidden until you decide. Find out more on the How it works page.

For other machines there are engine oils and transmission oils.

Questions and answers

How do I find out which hydraulic oil to use?

Check the machine's manual: it gives the viscosity grade (for example ISO VG 46) and the type. If there is no manual, write the machine model in your request.

What do HLP and HVLP mean?

HLP is standard hydraulic oil with anti-corrosion and anti-wear additives. HVLP has a higher viscosity index and works better when temperatures change.

Is a drum or cans better value?

For large machines a drum is usually cheaper per litre, if you will use the volume. For small quantities, cans are more practical.

Can I mix different hydraulic oils?

It is better not to, without a specialist's advice. Before switching to another oil, ask the machine's maker or a mechanic.
