Kids' bikes and ride-ons: how to choose and buy without overpaying

Choose the type of ride by your child's age

Kids' ride-ons are a whole ladder. For the smallest there are push cars, ride-on toys and a tricycle with a parent handle. From one and a half to two years you can try a balance bike, which teaches balance better than stabiliser wheels. From three or four the child can manage a scooter, and then a two-wheeler. A separate branch is electric cars and electric scooters, chosen by weight and the age they are made for.

Go not only by age but by the child's height: it decides the frame size and the seat and handlebar height.

Wheels and size

For a bicycle the wheel diameter is chosen by height: 12 inches for the smallest, 14 and 16 for preschoolers, 18–20 for schoolchildren. The child should reach the ground with the feet when seated and hold the handlebar with confidence. For scooters, look at the wheel diameter: larger wheels cope better with rough roads, small ones are better on smooth surfaces.

Air-filled tyres are softer to ride, while solid ones need no pumping. Ask the seller which are fitted.

What to put in your request

  • type of ride — bicycle, balance bike, scooter, electric car, ride-on toy;
  • child's age and height;
  • wheel diameter — for example 16 inches;
  • brand — Puky, Micro or another;
  • battery — for electric: voltage, number of motors, whether there is a parent remote;
  • colour and design;
  • condition, budget and delivery city.

Example: “I'm looking for a used tricycle with a parent handle in good condition for a 2-year-old. Any colour, budget up to $120, pickup or courier delivery to Jurong West.”

New or used

Children grow fast, so a good used ride is a smart choice. Ask for photos of the frame, wheels and brakes and a video of it running. For an electric car, be sure to ask about the battery condition: if it doesn't hold a charge, replacing it will be a noticeable part of the budget. Check that the parent remote works and the seat belts are fine.

How to compare offers

Check wheel diameter, frame material, weight and what is included: mudguards, basket, stabiliser wheels, handle. A bicycle in bulky packaging may cost more to deliver, so ask in what size it will be shipped and whether it will be assembled. For the warranty, ask what it covers and who handles claims.

How it works in BlaBlaPrice

You write one request and sellers reply in the chat: model, what is included, price, delivery. BlaBlaPrice shows the best offer first, judged on what it contains, and gives you reviews of the seller. Sellers see their place among the others, so they compete for your request. Contacts stay hidden until you choose. Details are here.

Questions and answers

From what age is a balance bike suitable?

Usually from one and a half to two years, when the child walks confidently. Go by height and seat height, and give both in the request.

How do I choose the bicycle wheel size?

By the child's height: the taller the child, the larger the wheels. If you are unsure, write the height in the request and sellers will suggest suitable options.

What should I look at when buying a kids' electric car?

At battery voltage, the number of motors, a parent remote and seat belts. For a used one, be sure to ask how the battery holds its charge.

Does the buyer pay for offers?

No, it is free for buyers. The seller pays a small fee only if you choose them.
