LPG / CNG kits for cars: kit, fitting, prices

Engine first, then the kit

A gas kit is chosen for the engine, not the make. The main question is the type of injection. On naturally aspirated petrol engines with multipoint injection, an ordinary 4th generation kit goes on. On direct-injection engines (TSI, FSI, GDI) you need special systems with extra gas injection, and they cost more. So in your request be sure to write the capacity, the number of cylinders and whether the engine is turbocharged.

LPG or CNG

LPG kits are compact: the cylinder is smaller. CNG needs a heavier cylinder, and it takes more space. The choice decides both the equipment and the room in the boot, so settle it before ordering. Check also which gas is easy to fill near you. One more point: a gas system makes sense when yearly mileage is high and the engine is in good condition, because weak compression or faulty ignition show up more on gas.

What to put in your request

  • What you need — a full kit or single parts: reducer, injectors, multivalve, cylinder, control unit.
  • Car and engine — Skoda Octavia, 2012, 1.8 TSI, 4 cylinders.
  • Kit generation — 2nd, 4th, 5th or a system for direct injection.
  • Gas — LPG or CNG.
  • Cylinder — shape and volume: toroidal 54 l (for the spare-wheel well) or cylindrical.
  • Make — if you have a preference.
  • Fitting and paperwork — with installation, tuning and recording the fitment in the vehicle papers.
  • City and budget.

Example: “I need a CNG kit for a Skoda Octavia, 2012, 1.8 TSI. A system for direct injection, a toroidal 54 l cylinder. With fitting, tuning and the paperwork in Woodlands. Budget up to $770.”

How to compare offers

On BlaBlaPrice, offers come from fitters and gas kit shops. The platform shows first the offer that is best on content, reviews of the seller are visible next to each, and the sellers compete for your request. Compare by what is in the kit: how many injectors, what power the reducer is rated for, whether fine filters are included, what valve is on the cylinder. Ask about the warranty on the equipment and separately on the fitting, and whether the price includes the paperwork at the service centre and the entry in the registration papers. Find out who does the tuning and whether there is a re-tune after the first few thousand kilometres.

Common mistakes

Fitting a cheap kit on a direct-injection engine that will “eat” the valves. Buying a cylinder that does not fit in the well. Saving on filters and the reducer. Skipping the paperwork and then having trouble at inspections and with insurance. Look at related parts in the fuel system and engine sections. To see how the site itself works, read the “How it works” page.

Questions and answers

Can I fit a gas kit on a direct-injection engine?

Yes, but special systems are needed, and they cost more than ordinary ones. Be sure to state the engine in your request, for example 1.8 TSI.

How long does fitting take?

Usually a day or two with tuning, but the technician gives the exact time. Ask about it in the offer.

Does the kit need to be registered?

Yes, after installation the equipment is entered in the vehicle’s papers. Ask the seller whether the paperwork is included in the price.

Toroidal or cylindrical cylinder?

The toroidal one goes into the spare-wheel well, the cylindrical one into the boot, and it usually takes more room. The choice depends on what you are ready to give up.
