Motorcycle Rims and Wheels: How to Choose for a Bike or Scooter

What exactly you need

A motorcycle “wheel” can mean different things: a bare rim without a tyre, a complete wheel with a tyre, a rim for a spoked wheel, or separate spokes. So the first decision is what to buy. If the tyres are still good, a rim is enough; if the wear is heavy, a ready wheel is cheaper.

Alloy or spoked

Alloy rims are usually tubeless and need no tightening, but a hard knock can crack them. Spoked wheels are more forgiving off the road and can be restored by replacing spokes or the rim, but they are harder to maintain and often run with a tube. On scooters, small 10 or 12-inch rims are the most common.

What must match your motorcycle

  • Front or rear. The wheels differ in size, hub width and the drive for the rear sprocket or brake disc.
  • Brake type. A rim for a disc brake or a drum brake means different hubs, and they are not interchangeable.
  • Rim size. For example 2.50×17, 10" or 12". It must match the tyre.
  • Fitting dimensions. Axle diameter, hub width, sprocket or disc mounting. The easiest way to check them is by the model and year of the motorcycle.

Original, aftermarket or used

Original parts fit without adjustment; an aftermarket part is cheaper, but check the fitting dimensions before buying. A used rim can cost much less, but ask for photos from different angles and ask about runout and repairs. For a spoked wheel, it helps to confirm that the rim is true and the spokes are not loose.

On BlaBlaPrice you do not have to search groups and scrapyards: you write a request, and motorcycle parts sellers reply in the chat with photos and prices. They see where they stand among the others, so they compete on terms. Your number stays hidden until you choose a seller. Before shipping, ask for photos of the rim from all sides and of the hub, and check whether the brake disc, sprocket or bearings come with it, because different sellers count them differently. Read more in How it works.

What to put in your request

  • which part — rim, complete wheel, rim for a spoked wheel, spokes;
  • bike model — make, model, year, for example a Honda Dio scooter;
  • front or rear;
  • size — for example 10 inches;
  • type of rim — alloy or spoked;
  • brake type — disc or drum;
  • original or aftermarket, new or used;
  • delivery city and budget.

Example: “I need a front complete wheel for a Honda Dio scooter, 10 inches, for a drum brake. Original or used in working condition. Delivery to Tampines, budget up to $61.”

If you need the tyre separately, see motorcycle tyres, and for cars there is the rims section.

Questions and answers

Can I fit a rim from a different motorcycle model?

Sometimes, if the fitting dimensions, brake type and sprocket mounting match. Do not risk it without checking.

Which should I choose: alloy or spoked?

Alloy is usually tubeless and easier to maintain; spoked is better off the road and easier to repair. The choice depends on the type of bike.

How do I find the rim size?

The size is on the tyre: for example 120/70-17 means a 17-inch rim. You can also find it by model and year in a catalogue.

Does the buyer pay for BlaBlaPrice?

No, it is free for buyers. A seller pays a small fee only when you choose them.
