Power tool and petrol tool repair: chainsaws, grinders, drills

Repair, a new part or a new tool

Before you order, work out what makes more sense. Replacing the brushes of an angle grinder or hammer drill, or the chain or bar of a chainsaw, costs little compared with a new tool. But if the stator winding has burnt out or the gearbox of a cheap cordless drill is broken, the repair can come close to the price of a new one. After the diagnosis, the technician will help you work out which is better value.

Professional models of well-known brands usually have spare parts and diagrams available. Cheap no-name ones may have no parts at all.

What to put in your request

  • what the tool is — chainsaw, brush cutter, angle grinder, hammer drill, cordless drill, trimmer;
  • the model — brand and exact name, for example Stihl MS 180;
  • the fault — will not start, loses power, sparks, overheats, knocking, needs servicing or sharpening;
  • age — how many years, or the year of purchase;
  • spare parts — original only or compatible are fine;
  • visit or delivery — you will bring it to the workshop or need a pickup;
  • time, city, budget.

Example: “Stihl MS 180 chainsaw, 3 years old. It will not start after lying unused since last season, probably a carburettor or spark plug problem. I need a check-up and cleaning, plus chain sharpening. I will bring it to the workshop, Singapore, 1–2 days, budget up to $23.”

Petrol or electric: what to watch for

Petrol tools often fail because of the fuel: stale petrol, the wrong mixture ratio for two-stroke engines, a dirty air filter. In such cases, cleaning the carburettor and replacing the spark plug and filters usually solves the problem. In electric tools, the usual causes are worn brushes, bearings, the switch and the cable. In a cordless one, they are the battery cells and the protection board.

Sharpening (chains, discs, drill bits) is a separate service. It is worth mentioning in your request if you need it.

How to compare offers

  • Is the diagnosis free, and is it counted in the repair cost?
  • Is the price given with spare parts, or are they extra?
  • What is the warranty and what does it cover?
  • Does the technician work with your brand and have access to original parts?
  • What is the time, especially if you need the tool in season?

A common mistake is to keep working with a tool that overheats or sparks. It quickly turns a small repair into a big one. Stop work as soon as you notice an unusual sound or smell.

How it works on BlaBlaPrice

It is enough to create a request instead of searching for workshops. They reply in the chat: price, or what it depends on, time and warranty. The request is checked before it is shown, and you are told what is missing. Technicians see where they stand among the others, so they often improve their terms, and reviews are shown beside the offers. Only the technician you choose gets your contacts. Questions and answers

Is it worth repairing a cheap tool?

It depends on the fault and the price of a new one. Ask for a diagnosis and compare the repair cost with the price of a replacement.

Why won’t my chainsaw start after being stored?

Often because of old fuel, a dirty carburettor or a spark plug. The technician will say for sure.

Do they sharpen chains and discs?

Many technicians do. State it in the request on a separate line.

Can I bring the tool in without a technician visit?

Yes, for small tools this is normal practice. In the request, say whether you will bring it or need a pickup.
