How to hire a tiler: bathrooms, floors, porcelain tiles
Not all tilers work the same way
Tiles in a bathroom, large-format porcelain on a floor and mosaic in a shower are different tasks. Large format demands a perfectly flat base and a levelling system. Mosaic takes patience and neat joints. A bathroom adds waterproofing and falls to the drain. A good craftsman asks about the base and the material before talking about price.
What to include in the vacancy
- Type of work — bathrooms, floors, large-format porcelain, mosaic, kitchen backsplash.
- Pay — per square foot, for example $0.91 per sq ft, or per day or per site.
- Work location — city and area, for example Singapore.
- Schedule — for example, six days a week, 9 am to 6 pm.
- Type of employment — permanently on sites or a one-off order.
- Experience — in years and with which tile formats.
- Tools — their own (tile cutter, levels, notched trowels) or the company's.
Example request
“A tiler is needed for permanent work in a renovation crew in Singapore. Tiles in bathrooms and porcelain on floors, sometimes large format 60×120 cm. Pay $0.91 per sq ft, six days a week, 9 am to 6 pm. At least 3 years' experience, own tools.”
How it works on BlaBlaPrice
You write your request once, in your own words. It is checked: no ads or contact details, and hints on missing details. Tilers in your area reply in the chat: they tell you about their experience, price per square foot and when they can start. BlaBlaPrice shows the strongest replies first, and the candidate's reviews are visible next to each. Your phone number stays hidden, and you pay nothing for the search. More on the page “How it works”.
What to look at in the replies
Ask how the craftsman checks the base: with a long straightedge or a laser level. Checking the plane before the first row is what separates neat work from work that later “moves”.
Ask for photos of corners, joints with plumbing fixtures and cut edges: the quality shows there. Ask how the craftsman prepares the base, whether they prime it, which adhesive they use for porcelain and whether they work with a tile levelling system. For a floor with underfloor heating, ask whether they have experience.
Agree whether the price per square foot includes preparing the base, waterproofing and grouting. Base preparation can be a separate job paid separately. For plastering walls before tiling you will need a plasterer, and for the plumbing in the bathroom a plumber.
