Body care: how to choose a cream, oil or scrub and pay a fair price

Purpose first, scent second

A cream for stretch marks, an anti-cellulite product, a moisturiser for dry skin and a deodorant are different jobs, and each needs its own formula. Decide what you want: moisture, firmness, after-shave care, less sweating.

Keep sensitive skin in mind too. It usually does best with simple formulas and no strong scent. If you have had an allergy to ingredients, read the label.

What to put in your request

• Product — cream, lotion, oil, shower gel, scrub, deodorant, hand cream.
• Concern — stretch marks, cellulite, dryness, firmness, sweating.
• Skin type — dry, sensitive, normal, oily.
• Brand — for example, Nivea.
• Scent — a favourite, or fragrance-free.
• Volume — 200, 400 ml.
• Quantity — how many pieces.
• Budget and city.

Example: “I need a rich body cream for dry, sensitive skin, fragrance-free, Nivea or similar, 400 ml, 2 pieces. Hamilton, courier delivery. Budget up to $25.”

How to compare body products

Compare the price per 100 ml, not per jar, because the same cream can come in different sizes. Look at the ingredients: for dry skin look for glycerin, rosehip, shea butter and jojoba oil, and for a soothing effect, panthenol. For scrubs, check the grain size and whether it suits sensitive skin.

Deodorants come as antiperspirants and not: the first reduce sweating, the second only mask the smell. Say which you want in your request.

What to ask the seller

• Is the product sealed, and what is its expiry date?
• Is it an original batch and not an opened tester?
• Is there a discount for buying several?
• How is it packed for delivery? Glass jars of oil need protection from knocks.
