Motorcycle Chain and Sprockets: Set, Pitch, Links — How to Buy
Three numbers that define the set
A drive chain is chosen by its pitch (420, 428, 520, 525, 530), the number of links and the type. Sprockets are chosen by the number of teeth and the mounting. A typical entry “520, 112 links, 15/45” means pitch 520, 112 links, a front sprocket with 15 teeth and a rear one with 45. If you have not changed the gearing, look for the same numbers that were on the bike.
When you change the number of teeth, you change the way the bike rides: a bigger rear sprocket gives livelier acceleration but a lower top speed. If you are simply replacing a worn set, keep the stock numbers.
Plain chain or sealed chain
Ordinary chains are cheaper, but they stretch faster and need frequent lubrication. Chains with seals (O-ring, X-ring) keep the grease inside and last longer, especially on road bikes. The brand plays a role too: DID, RK, Regina and others have different ranges. Ask not only about the name but also about the grade of the chain.
What to put in your request
- which part — chain, front sprocket, rear sprocket, full set;
- bike model — for example Honda CBR600F;
- chain pitch — for example 520;
- number of links — for example 112;
- number of teeth — front and rear, for example 15/45;
- chain type — plain or O-ring, X-ring;
- brand — for example DID;
- condition, delivery city and budget.
Example: “I need a set for a Honda CBR600F: DID 520 O-ring chain with 112 links, sprockets 15/45. All new. Delivery to Davao City, budget up to ₱4,400.”
The number of links depends on the swingarm length and the teeth: after changing the sprockets to a different tooth count, the chain may need to be longer or shorter by a few links. So in your request it is better to give both the old and the new numbers, and the seller will work it out.
When comparing offers
- Whether the chain already has the right number of links, or must be shortened.
- Whether a joining link (the master link) is included and which kind: a riveted one is more reliable.
- Sprocket material: steel ones last longer, aluminium ones are lighter but wear faster.
- Whether the chain and sprockets come as one set: it is better to change them together.
A typical mistake is to fit a new chain on worn sprockets: it will stretch quickly. Another is to buy the wrong pitch, because 520 and 525 look alike but are not compatible.
How it works on BlaBlaPrice
You create one request with the numbers of the set, and motorcycle-parts sellers reply in the chat with price and terms. They see where their offer stands, so they often improve their terms. The site shows the best-value one first, with reviews of the seller beside it. Your phone number stays hidden. More in “How it works”.
Along with the chain, look at drive and running gear and bearings.
