How to Buy Car Rims: Alloy, Steel, New and Used

A rim fits only when several parameters match

It is easier to make a mistake with rims than it seems: the diameter fits, but the bolts do not line up. Four things must match: the diameter (R16), the PCD bolt pattern (for example 5×112, meaning five holes on a 112 mm circle), the offset ET and the centre bore diameter DIA. The rim width J decides which tyre can go on it.

The offset ET affects how the wheel sits in the arch: too low an offset can rub the wing, too high can hit the brake or suspension. If the DIA is larger than the hub, it is closed up with centring rings, and if it is smaller, the rim will not fit at all.

Alloy, steel or forged

  • Steel (pressed) — cheap, easy to straighten after a knock, but heavier and plainer. Good for a second set.
  • Alloy (light alloy) — lighter, better looking, but a hard knock may crack them instead of bending.
  • Forged — light and strong, but much more expensive; rarely needed.

New or used

Used rims can be a good buy, but ask for photos of both sides and the inner part. Look for cracks, weld marks and runout: a good seller is ready to show the result of a check on a balancing machine. A repaired rim should be declared openly.

How to compare offers

Check all the parameters: PCD, ET, DIA, J, diameter. Check whether the price is for one rim, a pair or a set, and whether wheel bolts, caps and pressure sensors are included. For used rims, ask about the condition of the paint or finish and whether the rims have been balanced.

On BlaBlaPrice you do not search through listings: you write one request, and sellers reply in the chat with photos, price and delivery. Each seller sees where they stand among the others and can improve their offer, so the price often comes out lower. Your phone number stays hidden until you choose. Read more on the How it works page.

What to put in your request

  • car model — make, model, year, for example Skoda Octavia, 2014;
  • diameter — R16 and others;
  • bolt pattern — 5×112, 4×100 and so on;
  • parameters — width J, offset ET, bore diameter DIA;
  • type — alloy, steel, forged;
  • quantity — a set of 4 or fewer;
  • new or used and colour;
  • city and budget.

Example: “I am looking for a set of alloy rims R16, 5×112, 7J ET45, DIA 57.1 for a Skoda Octavia. New, or used with no cracks or repairs, silver. Delivery to Quezon City, budget up to ₱23,000.”

If you are still choosing tyres, see car tyres or ready complete wheels: then the seller checks compatibility for you.

Questions and answers

How do I find the bolt pattern of a rim?

You can find it in the car manual, in a catalogue by make and year, and on the back of the rim. If you are not sure, give the car model and year in your request.

Can I fit rims with a different offset?

A small difference is sometimes acceptable, but the wheel may rub the arch or the brakes. Better to check with the seller or the fitting centre.

Which should I choose: alloy or steel?

Steel is cheaper and less sensitive to knocks from potholes, so it suits a second set or a work car. Alloy looks better and is lighter for everyday use.

Does the buyer pay for BlaBlaPrice?

No, it is free for buyers. A seller pays a small fee only when you choose them.
