How to Buy Used Car Tyres: Tread, Age, Condition and Price

Why you should ask more about used tyres

A new tyre is described by size and brand, but a used one also has a history. Two offers in the same size can differ so much that one lasts two seasons and the other a few months. So bargain not for a “good price” but for a specific condition.

What to look at first

  • Remaining tread. The wear indicator in the grooves marks about 1.6 mm, the minimum for safe use. In practice, take tyres with 5–6 mm or more, otherwise they are nearly at the end of their life.
  • Even wear. Wear on one side only or a bald strip in the middle points to alignment or pressure problems. In a set, the tyres should be worn about the same.
  • Year of manufacture. The DOT code ends in four digits, the week and the year. Rubber on a tyre older than 6–7 years is hard and grips the road worse, even if the tread is deep.
  • Damage. There should be no bulges, separation, deep cuts or foreign patches on the sidewall. Patches on the tread are not always acceptable — ask what exactly was repaired.

Take-off tyres and local used tyres

Tyres taken off cars with low mileage often have less wear and were better kept, but that is no guarantee. Ask for photos of the tread in several places and of the sidewall, and if possible a photo of the DOT code. If the seller will not show the tyres in person, treat that as a warning sign.

How to compare offers

Compare on the same set of parameters: size, type, minimum tread, year. Check whether the tyres are sold as a set or one by one, and whether you can come and see them. Add up the cost with fitting and balancing: sometimes the difference between sellers is eaten up by delivery.

On BlaBlaPrice you write a request once, and sellers reply in the chat with photos, condition and price. They see where they stand among the others and may lower the price or add fitting to win your request. Contacts are opened only to the one you choose. Read more in How it works.

What to put in your request

  • size — for example 205/55 R16;
  • type — summer or touring, all-season, winter for the hills;
  • remaining tread — for example from 6 mm;
  • quantity — a set of 4, a pair or one;
  • year of manufacture — not older than a given year;
  • condition — no patches, bulges or uneven wear, origin;
  • brand — if you have a preference;
  • fitting, city and budget.

Example: “I need used all-season tyres 195/65 R15, a set of 4, tread from 6 mm, not older than 2022, no patches or bulges, preferably take-offs from low-mileage cars. Makati, fitting needed. Budget up to ₱7,600 for the set.”

If you want to compare, also look at new car tyres or complete wheels: sometimes a ready set is better value.

Questions and answers

What remaining tread is acceptable for used tyres?

Take 5–6 mm or more, otherwise you will soon have to replace them. It is worth stating the exact figure in your request.

How do I find the year a tyre was made?

The sidewall has a DOT code whose last four digits give the week and the year. Ask the seller to send a photo of this code.

Can I buy one tyre to go with the ones I have?

It is not advisable: different wear and a different model make handling worse. It is better to take a pair for one axle or a full set.

Do all sellers see my phone number?

No, contacts are hidden. You pass them only to the seller you choose, and by the channel you pick yourself.
