Cat and dog food: how to buy the right food for less

First the animal, then the brand

Food is chosen by age, size and health. Kittens and puppies need more protein and calories, adults need a balanced diet, and older animals need lighter formulas. For small dog breeds there are small kibbles, and for large ones formulas that support the joints. Neutered cats do well on foods with controlled calories, and there are separate lines for animals prone to urinary stones.

Veterinary diets (for allergies, kidney or stomach disease) are prescribed by a vet, and you should not choose them yourself.

How to read the ingredients and compare foods

  • Meat or fish should come first in the list, not general “animal derivatives”.
  • Specifics count: “chicken, 25%” says more than “meat and by-products”.
  • Hypoallergenic and grain-free lines are made with a single protein source (duck, lamb, salmon), so that intolerance is easier to find.
  • Dry food is more economical and easier to store, while wet food (pouch, tin) tastes better and adds moisture, so the two are often combined.
  • Compare the price per kilogram, not per pack, and look at the daily portion: a pricier concentrated food may turn out cheaper to feed.

What to put in your request

  • for whom — cat or dog, age, size, neutered or not;
  • type of food — dry, wet, treats, veterinary diet;
  • brand or line, for example Royal Canin Sterilised;
  • special needs — hypoallergenic, grain-free, sensitive digestion;
  • flavour or protein — duck, salmon, lamb, chicken;
  • weight and quantity — a 10 kg bag, number of packs;
  • budget and delivery city.

Example: “I need dry hypoallergenic food with duck for a neutered cat, 2 bags of 10 kg each, Royal Canin Sterilised or similar. Singapore, courier delivery. Budget up to $77.”

How to compare offers

Check the exact name of the line, the weight and the expiry date: with a big bag it matters that the food can be finished before it expires. Ask whether the pack is original, whether there is a discount for quantity and whether delivery is included. A small difference in price can vanish if delivery turns out to be charged.

Move to a new food gradually over 7–10 days, mixing it with the old one, to avoid an upset stomach.

How BlaBlaPrice works here

You describe what you are looking for once on BlaBlaPrice, and shops and suppliers reply in the chat: availability, price, pack size, delivery. The platform shows the best-fitting offer first, and sellers compete with each other. Your phone number stays hidden until you choose a seller. Details are on the “How it works” page.

For other accessories there is the “Pet supplies” section, and you can also look at cats and dogs.

Questions and answers

Is dry or wet food better?

Both have advantages: dry is more economical, wet tastes better and adds moisture. Many owners combine them, but it is best to agree the plan with a vet.

How do I switch to another food?

Gradually, over 7–10 days, adding the new food to the old. A sudden change can cause an upset stomach.

What does super-premium mean?

It is a marketing class that usually points to better ingredients, but there is no clear standard. Always read the ingredients and the daily portion.
