Laptop and computer repair: diagnosis, upgrades, cleaning
Your data matters more than the hardware
Before you take a computer in for repair, think about what is stored on it. A technician can replace a keyboard or a fan without touching your files. But with disk problems, reflashing or reinstalling the system, data can be lost. If the laptop holds photos, documents or work projects, say so in your request. The technician will then plan for saving or recovering the information.
Even better, make a backup beforehand if the device switches on at all.
What to put in your request
- what the equipment is — laptop, desktop PC, all-in-one;
- the model — the full name, for example Lenovo IdeaPad 5 15ALC05;
- the fault — overheats and shuts down, will not switch on, broken screen, liquid spilled, noise, slow performance;
- configuration — current and wanted specifications for an upgrade: processor, RAM, SSD, graphics card;
- data — whether files must be saved or recovered;
- spare parts — original or compatible;
- visit or sending — the technician comes to you, courier pickup, or you deliver it yourself;
- time, city, budget.
Example: “Lenovo IdeaPad 5 15ALC05 laptop overheats and shuts down within a few minutes. I need a check-up, dust cleaning and new thermal paste. I also want to go from 8 to 16 GB of RAM and a 512 GB SSD, and the data must be kept. Singapore, the technician to visit my office, budget up to $45.”
Repair, upgrade or replacement
For an old laptop it is often smarter not to repair but to boost it: add RAM and swap the hard disk for an SSD, and the system comes back to life. But not every model allows it. In some, the memory is soldered on and cannot be increased. That is why the model in your request is so important.
More serious repairs, such as the motherboard, graphics chip, power connectors or the screen panel, cost more, and sometimes replacing the device is better value. Ask the technician to tell you honestly whether it makes sense.
How to compare offers
- Is the diagnosis free, and is it counted in the cost?
- Is the price given with parts, and what kind of parts are they: new, original or second-hand?
- How does the technician handle your data: do they make a copy, and do they agree before reinstalling?
- What warranty is given on the work and on the replaced parts?
- What is the time, especially if parts have to be ordered?
A common mistake is to leave the computer without a backup and without the passwords the technician may ask for. Also do not stay silent about liquid having got into the device. It changes the order of diagnosis.
How it works on BlaBlaPrice
It is enough to create a request instead of phoning service centres. Technicians reply in the chat: price, or what it depends on, time, warranty and whether they can visit. The request is checked, and you are told what is missing. Technicians see where they stand among the others, so they often improve their terms, and reviews are shown next to the offers. Only the technician you choose gets your contacts. More in how it works.
