Digital camera: how to choose and buy at a better price

DSLR, mirrorless or compact

The type of camera decides its size, comfort and capabilities.

  • DSLRs have an optical viewfinder, a wide choice of lenses and long battery life. Fewer new models are made, but there are many on the second-hand market.
  • Mirrorless cameras are lighter, have an electronic viewfinder and suit video and modern autofocus features better.
  • Compacts fit in a pocket and suit travel without extra baggage.

Sensor format also matters: full frame gives better light and depth, while a crop sensor means a lighter and cheaper system.

Do not forget the lens

A camera is sold as a “body” (without a lens) or as a kit. A kit with a kit lens is handy to start with, but for portraits, travel or sport you often need a separate one. So say in your request whether you need a lens and which: “with a 24-70 lens” or “body only”.

New or used: what to check

For a used camera the main figure is the shutter count, that is, the number of shots taken. A shutter has a limited life, and replacing it costs money. Ask about the count, the condition of the sensor (no spots or scratches), and the buttons, the display and the stabilisation. Ask for test shots and photos of the body from all sides. New gear comes with an official warranty and the full box.

What to put in your request

  • Model - for example, Sony A7 III.
  • Type - DSLR, mirrorless, compact, full frame or crop.
  • New or used, and for used the acceptable shutter count.
  • Lens - body only or with a lens.
  • What for - a beginner, portraits, video blogging, travel, professional work.
  • What is included - battery, charger, card, bag.
  • Warranty.
  • Delivery, city, budget.

Example: “I am looking for a full-frame mirrorless camera for video blogging and portraits, such as a Sony A7 III, used with a shutter count up to 20,000, with two batteries and a memory card. Courier delivery to Jurong West. Budget up to $1,200.”

How to compare offers

Compare the same condition, shutter count and kit. A camera with a higher count but with a lens may be a better deal than a “cleaner” body only, depending on your needs. For new gear, ask about the official warranty and where the equipment came from.

How BlaBlaPrice helps

You create a request once, and sellers reply in a chat with the model, condition, price and delivery. Each one sees where their offer stands and can improve it, so the price often turns out better. Seller reviews are visible alongside, and contacts are opened only to the one you choose. More: how it works.

Questions and answers

Which is better: a DSLR or a mirrorless camera?

Mirrorless cameras are lighter and handier for video, while DSLRs have many inexpensive lenses on the used market. In the end it depends on your budget and needs.

What is shutter count?

It is the number of shots the camera has taken. The lower it is, the more life is left.

Can I buy just the body without a lens?

Yes, it is called a “body”. In your request say whether you need a lens or not.

Is it worth buying a used camera as a beginner?

It can be, if the shutter count is moderate and the seller gives photos and test shots. Also ask about a seller's warranty.
