Robot vacuum cleaner: how to choose one for a home with pets or rugs

Start with your home, not the brand

A robot vacuum behaves differently in different homes. High door thresholds, thin rugs with fringes, cables on the floor and pets with long hair all affect the choice. So describe your home: the area, the number of rooms or floors, whether you have a cat or a dog, and how many rugs there are.

What to put in your request

  • type of cleaning — dry only or mopping too, with vibrating or rotating mop pads;
  • dock — a simple charging base, automatic emptying, self-cleaning and drying of the mops, automatic water refill;
  • floor area;
  • conditions at home — pets, rugs, thresholds, cables, children;
  • features — lidar, room map, obstacle avoidance, app or voice control, extra suction on rugs;
  • brand and model, new or used, warranty, city and budget.

Example: “I need a new robot vacuum for a 750 sq ft flat in Singapore with a cat and rugs. Dry and wet cleaning, lidar and room map, self-cleaning dock. Roborock Q7 Max or similar, 12 months warranty. Budget up to $460.”

Navigation and dock: where the price difference comes from

Robots with lidar build a map of the rooms and clean in neat rows, while simpler ones with a camera or gyroscope move less predictably and miss patches more often. Obstacle avoidance decides whether the robot runs over a sock or a cable. A dock can empty the dust bin automatically, and the most expensive ones also wash and dry the mops. That is convenient, but it adds to the price and needs space for the base.

Things to watch out for

  • Mop pads don't replace scrubbing a badly soiled floor by hand.
  • The threshold height a robot can climb differs from model to model. Measure yours and ask the seller.
  • Long hair can wind around the brush, so look for a model with an anti-tangle system.
  • Consumables: filters, brushes, mop pads and dock bags. Find out if they are sold and at what price.
  • App control: check that the app works in a language you are comfortable with.

Before buying, clear cables and chargers off the floor, and think in advance about the doors the robot should open or avoid. A virtual wall or no-go zone is a useful feature: it keeps the robot out of the room with the pet's bowl or a children's room full of small toys.

How it works with BlaBlaPrice

You describe the conditions at home on BlaBlaPrice, and sellers reply in chat with the model, dock, price and delivery. They can see where their offer stands and compete, so the terms are often better. The best-value offer is shown first, with reviews next to it. Contacts stay hidden and are opened only to the seller you choose. More in How it works.

If you are interested in regular cleaning, see vacuum cleaners. And for washing and drying clothes there are washing machines.

Questions and answers

Do I need lidar?

It gives an accurate map and a steady route, so it helps in larger flats. For a small home simpler navigation is sometimes enough.

Will the robot cope with rugs?

Most manage low-pile rugs, but thick rugs and fringes can be a problem. Mention your rugs in the request.

Do I need a self-cleaning dock?

It saves time, but costs more and takes up space. If you clean daily and don't mind emptying the bin, a simple base will do.

Do all sellers see my phone number?

No, contacts stay hidden and are opened only to the seller you choose.
