Food and drink: how to buy straight from producers

It is better to know where your food comes from

The quality of food depends on its origin, storage and shelf life. That is why in this category it pays to buy directly from farmers, beekeepers, producers and suppliers, where you can ask about the raw materials and how it is made. And when offers come from several sellers at once, it is easier to find both quality and a good price.

Estimate the quantity and how often you need it in advance: the terms will differ for a home fridge, seasonal stocking up, a cafe or a canteen.

The sections

Natural sweets: honey and bee products. The basics of the diet: meat and poultry, fish and seafood, dairy, cheese and eggs. Seasonal: vegetables, fruit, berries and mushrooms.

For the pantry and kitchen: grains, flour and groceries. Drinks: coffee and tea, and drinking water and soft drinks.

What to put in your request

  • What exactly — the product, variety, type, breed or region of origin.
  • Quantity — kilograms, litres, crates, one-off or regular.
  • Quality — fresh, chilled, frozen; grade, fat content, grind or roast.
  • Format — whole, cut, packed, vacuum-packed.
  • Production date and shelf life — the minimum remaining shelf life.
  • Documents — food safety and quality documents (such as a food business registration), if you are buying for a business.
  • Delivery — the city, pick-up, cold chain or freezing in transit.
  • Budget — if you want to name one.

How to judge quality and compare

For honey, ask whose harvest it is (the year, the region, the type), how it was stored and whether you can taste a sample. Crystallisation is not a sign of fakery, but honey that is too runny and cheap should be checked. For meat and fish: chilled or frozen, the date of slaughter or catch, the method of freezing and the percentage of glaze, because glaze adds weight.

With dairy and eggs, look at the expiry date, the grade, the fat content and the storage conditions. For vegetables and berries, the variety, size and season matter: out of season prices are usually higher. Judge coffee by its form (beans or ground), the variety, the country of origin and the roast date, since it is at its best within a few weeks of roasting. For grains and flour, check the grind, the grade and the packaging.

When comparing offers, bring everything to one unit: the price per kilogram or litre, with delivery. Ask whether there is a minimum order, how the goods are packed and how items that need to stay cold are delivered. For regular supplies, agree a schedule and what happens if a batch does not match what was agreed.

Typical mistakes: buying perishable food “with a reserve”, not checking the expiry date on receipt, and paying in advance to an unknown seller without any guarantees. Always inspect the goods on receipt, and if you doubt their freshness, it is better not to accept them.

How it works on BlaBlaPrice

You don't have to search for producers page by page and phone each one. Create one request: what you need, how much and where to deliver it. Farmers, beekeepers and suppliers reply in the chat: what they offer, the price or what it depends on, the timing, the delivery terms. They see where their offer ranks and can improve their terms to win your request.

The site shows the best-value offer first, and reviews of the seller are visible alongside. Contacts stay hidden until you choose an offer, and it is free for the buyer. More on the “How it works” page.

Questions and answers

How can I tell natural honey from a fake?

Ask about the harvest, the region and the apiary, and ask for a sample. Crystallisation is normal in itself, while a price that is too low or an odd taste should make you wary.

Can I order chilled food with delivery?

Yes, give your city in the request and say that the product must travel cold. Sellers will write how exactly they will deliver it.

How do I compare prices from different sellers?

Bring everything to the price per kilogram or litre, with delivery and the minimum order taken into account.

Can I agree regular deliveries?

Yes, say so in your request and state the quantity per week or month. Sellers will then offer terms for a regular customer.
