Kids' bike or balance bike: how to choose and buy at a good price
Balance bike, tricycle or two-wheeler: what and when
A child's first “vehicle” is a balance bike: it teaches balance, and the move to a two-wheel bicycle later happens without stabiliser wheels. A tricycle with a parent handle suits toddlers who are still pushed on walks. Two-wheelers are taken from about three to five years, depending on height and coordination. For teenagers there are separate models with a larger frame.
Wheel and frame size
The main parameter is the wheel diameter in inches: 12, 14, 16, 20 and up. It is chosen by height, not age, because children of the same age differ a lot. A child sitting on the bike should reach the ground with the feet, and the arms shouldn't be too stretched to the handlebar. Ask the seller about the seat height and its range of adjustment.
The frame material affects weight: an aluminium frame is lighter than steel, and it is easier for the child to control. A light bike isn't a luxury: a heavy frame takes a small child's strength and the wish to ride.
What to put in your request
- what exactly — balance bike, two-wheeler, tricycle with handle, teen bike;
- child's age and height, for example 5 years and 110 cm;
- wheel diameter in inches;
- what is included — stabiliser wheels, parent handle, hand brakes, basket, mudguards;
- frame and weight — aluminium, steel, magnesium;
- brand or model — Strider, Puky and others;
- for whom — boy or girl;
- new or used, budget, delivery city.
Example: “I need a balance bike for a boy of 2.5 years, height 92 cm, 12-inch wheels, light frame. Preferably a Strider or similar, new or used in good condition. Budget up to $61, courier delivery to Tampines.”
New or used
Children quickly outgrow a bicycle, so a used one in good condition is a sensible option. Ask for photos of the frame, wheels and brakes and a video of it rolling. Check there are no cracks in the frame, no play in the handlebar and no loose spokes. Brakes and tyres are the most common wear parts, and they can be replaced separately.
How to compare offers
Check wheel diameter, frame material and what is included. A cheap bike without brakes or mudguards may turn out not cheap: you will have to buy them. Ask about assembly: most bicycles arrive partly disassembled, and it is better to leave assembly to a mechanic or check with the seller. Don't forget delivery: a bulky box can cost more.
