PC games: how to buy a Steam key or disc without overpaying
Key, account or disc
Games for the computer are mostly sold in digital form today: a key for Steam, Epic or GOG that you activate in your own account. It is the simplest and most common option. Accounts with the game already on them are cheaper, but riskier: they may be region-restricted or blocked. Physical discs are rarer now, and are mostly collector editions.
So name the format in the request right away. If you need a key for your own account, say so, otherwise you may get an offer of someone else's account.
What to put in your request
- game title: full, with the part or year, for example Cyberpunk 2077;
- format: Steam, Epic or GOG key, account or physical disc;
- edition: standard, Deluxe, GOTY, with DLC or season pass;
- region: global key or for a specific region, and the language;
- new or used: for physical copies;
- delivery: key by e-mail, or courier delivery for a disc, and the city;
- budget.
Example: “I'm looking for a global Steam key for Cyberpunk 2077 with the Phantom Liberty DLC, Ultimate edition. Send the key by e-mail. Budget up to $38.”
Region and edition: where people go wrong most often
Keys can be tied to a region: a key bought for another country won't activate on your account. A global key suits everyone, a regional one only certain regions. Ask the seller whether the key works in Singapore and whether your language is available.
The second trap is the edition. The standard version doesn't include DLC, while Ultimate or Complete already contains everything. Two offers with different prices can mean different content, so compare by the list of what's included. Also find out whether the key is new and how fast it will be sent.
If you are pre-ordering a game, make sure the key opens on release day. For older games, bundles and sale packs are often good value.
