Sports and leisure: how to buy gear at a good price

Season, size and level decide everything

Sports gear is rarely “universal”. Skis are chosen by height, weight and riding style, skates by foot size and boot stiffness, a gym machine by the space in your flat and the load. Besides, most goods are seasonal: in winter demand rises for skis, and before summer for bicycles, kayaks and SUP boards. If you can, look outside the peak.

The section has many areas. Winter ones are skis and snowboards, ice skates and hockey: you need height, weight, shoe size and stiffness. For the gym there are athletics and fitness, gym machines and sports nutrition: state the maximum load, dimensions and your level of training. Separately come trekking, fishing, knives and multitools, and also water sports, SUP boards, scooters and skateboards, football, basketball, racket games and martial arts.

How it works through BlaBlaPrice

You write a request in your own words: what gear, for what height or size, and where you are. You can add one photo. The request is checked, and you are told what is missing. Then sports shops and private sellers reply: what they offer, the price, whether your size is available, delivery. They can see where their offer stands and improve their terms, so the price often turns out better. Contacts stay hidden. More on the “How it works” page.

What to put in your request

  • The sport or activity and your level: beginner, amateur, professional.
  • Size, height, weight — for gear that is fitted.
  • Condition — new or second-hand, acceptable wear.
  • Season and conditions of use — where exactly you will ski or trek.
  • What is included — bindings, cover, pump, spare parts.
  • City, delivery and a budget if you want to state it.

Example: “I need second-hand ski boots, size UK 9, medium stiffness, no cracks on the buckles. Kowloon, I can come to see them. Budget up to HK$750.”

How to compare offers and what affects the price

Compare gear by its specifications, not by its name: the same skis in different lengths ride differently. The price depends on the brand, materials, the level of the model (entry, mid or professional) and condition. For used gear, ask about the number of seasons, repairs and the condition of the bindings and sole. For gym machines, find out the weight and dimensions, the user weight limit and whether spare parts exist.

For fishing and trekking, look at materials, weight and how well the kit works together, not just the price of a single item. Discuss who pays for delivery of bulky goods and whether you can exchange the item if the size does not fit.

Safety and the details of different sports

A separate word on safety. Helmets, protective gear and bindings should not be bought second-hand without inspection: cracks, old plastic and tired straps are not always visible in a photo. So ask for photos from the inside and close up, and if possible agree on an inspection before payment. A child grows fast, but a helmet or boots “to grow into” fit badly, so take a size with only a little room, no more.

If you are buying gear for outdoor leisure, such as a tent or a sleeping bag, ask about the comfort temperature, weight, waterproofing and the condition of the seams. For fishing, length and the rod's rating matter, along with local rules.

Common mistakes

Buying “to grow into”, buying without trying on, ignoring the delivery of bulky goods and buying protective gear of unknown origin. Another mistake is to wait until the peak of the season, when the choice of sizes is narrower. Other leisure ideas are in the “Hobbies, leisure and sport” section.

Questions and answers

When is it better to buy seasonal gear?

It is often better to look just before the season or right after it, when demand is lower. But the exact terms depend on sellers, so compare offers.

Can I buy a second-hand gym machine?

Yes, but check how it works, the condition of the frame and fittings, and the weight. Ask whether there are papers, and discuss delivery and assembly in advance.

How do I choose a size if I cannot try it on?

State your height, weight and foot length in the request. Sellers will suggest a size and tell you whether you can exchange it.

Can all sellers see my phone number?

No, contacts are hidden. You open them only to the seller you choose.
