How to find a cashier for a shop, petrol pump or supermarket

First decide where and how the cashier will work

Working a till in a supermarket, at a petrol pump and in a pharmacy are three different profiles. In a supermarket speed and stamina matter: a stream of customers and long shifts. At a petrol pump there is billing for fuel and small items, and night hours. In a small shop the cashier often also arranges the goods and keeps an eye on the floor.

This decides who you look for. For a big flow of customers, a person with till experience is better; for a small outlet a beginner will do, and you can train them in a few days.

How search works through BlaBlaPrice

You don't have to sit on notice boards and answer every call. You write one job request in your own words, and candidates answer in chat: about their experience, when they can join and what pay they expect. Before it is shown, the post is checked for ads and contact details in the text, and you get hints on what else is needed to attract replies.

Your phone stays hidden, and you open contacts only for the person you choose. The job post is active for 7 days and can be extended or edited. It is free for the employer, and you can read more on how it works.

What to put in the job post

  • Duties — only the till, or also stocking, receiving goods, stock-taking;
  • Type of outlet — supermarket, petrol pump, pharmacy, neighbourhood shop;
  • Hours — 12-hour shifts, night hours, days off;
  • Pay — per month or per shift, whether there are bonuses, when it is paid;
  • Workplace — city and area, transport nearby;
  • Terms — on the rolls or not, with PF and ESI where applicable;
  • Experience — POS billing software, card machine, scanner.

Example: “Cashier needed at a petrol pump in Lucknow. 12-hour shifts, 8:00 to 20:00, duties: billing, selling coffee and small items, end-of-shift report. Pay ₹15,000 a month, on the rolls, experience with POS billing needed.”

What to look at when selecting

A cashier handles money, so neatness and honesty matter. Ask which tills and programs the candidate has worked with, what they did when the cash did not tally, and how they deal with irritated customers.

Agree a trial shift with a mentor: it shows right away the pace of work and how they talk to people. State clearly who is responsible for a shortage, and don't leave this topic for later.

Questions and answers

Can I hire a cashier without experience?

Yes, in small outlets a beginner is trained in a few days. Say in the post that experience is not required, and arrange a mentor.

How should I agree on responsibility for cash shortages?

Put the terms in writing before the person starts: who is responsible for a shortage and under what circumstances. Candidates value this.

Which hours are most often offered to cashiers?

Often long shifts on alternate days, or rotating shifts in shops with no day off. Say the hours and night shifts honestly so the right people reply.

Does the employer pay for a job post?

No, it is free for the person who posts the request. You get the candidate's contacts only when you choose them.
