How to hire an excavator operator: crawler, wheeled or backhoe loader
The machine decides the candidate
A crawler excavator operator in a deep pit, a wheeled excavator operator on city utility lines and a backhoe loader driver on a machine like the JCB 3CX have different skills. A backhoe loader can dig, load and level, but a large volume of earthwork needs heavier equipment. Manoeuvring near underground services, trench depth and working with attachments such as a hydraulic breaker also take experience.
So in the vacancy give the make or type of machine, and say whether the machine is yours or the operator comes with their own.
What to include in the vacancy
- Type of machine — crawler, wheeled, backhoe loader, the model, for example JCB 3CX.
- Salary — monthly pay, per shift or per hour; whether there are bonuses.
- Work location — city, district, and whether the operator will travel.
- Schedule — six days, five days or shifts.
- Licence — a valid driving licence of the right class for heavy earthmoving machinery, and operator training where applicable.
- Terms — permanent, seasonal, travelling between sites in the district.
- Experience — in years and on which machines.
- Accommodation — whether you provide a place to stay when the site is far away.
Example request
“Backhoe loader operator needed for a JCB 3CX around Pune. Trenches, foundation pits for private houses, work with a hydraulic breaker. Six days a week, salary from ₹25,000 a month. Valid licence for heavy machinery, at least 3 years' experience, permanent job.”
How to hire through BlaBlaPrice
Instead of sending out adverts, you write your request once. It is checked: no ads or contact details in the text, and you get hints on the details. Candidates in your area reply in the chat: which machines they have worked on, how much experience they have and what they expect. BlaBlaPrice shows the strongest replies first, and the candidate's reviews are visible next to them. Your phone number stays hidden, and you pay nothing for the search. More on the page “How it works”.
How to check a candidate
Ask whether the candidate can work with attachments: a hydraulic breaker, augers, wider buckets for levelling. This gets more out of the machine.
Ask them to name the sites and the machines they worked on, and to describe how they would dig a trench next to existing services. A good operator will ask for the layout of the utilities before the first bucket. Check the licence and make sure the documents have not expired. Agree who refuels the machine, keeps the record of engine hours and is responsible for maintenance.
A common mistake is not mentioning that travel is needed. The person agrees to “Pune”, then it turns out the sites are all over the district. For helper work around the machine look for a general labourer, and to run the site a site foreman.
